Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby MP705-8GB 8 GB Super-Slim MP3 and Video Player with Touchpad Control (Black)Customer Review: You get what you pay for Summary: 3 Stars
This mp3 player is functional, but somewhat poorly designed. In hindsight, I should have gotten an iPod. Here are my complaints with the device:
- It does not support playlists well. You must manually create a playlist by going into the device's memory on the computer and creating a new folder inside the "Music" folder. There are still problems with this, though. The device will count each version of a song once - so, for example, if you have a song on the device, copy the song, and put it into a new playlist folder you've created, the device will now have the song listed twice under your tracks. This can be solved by actually moving the file into the new folder instead of copying it, but it means you cannot have the song in two playlists without there being two copies of it.
- The only playlist that works is the built-in "favorites" playlist. However, this playlist is limited to 20 songs, so if you have more than 20 favorite songs, you're out of luck.
- Not all files are visible from your computer. This may be a problem with my computer, but given the other problems with this device, I am inclined to blame the mp3 player. The only way to delete files from the mp3 player is to open the Music folder on your computer and delete files from there. However, many songs that are on my device do not show up at all when I view my music from the computer. These files cannot be deleted, since they are apparently invisible to my computer.
- 7 times out of 10, tracks are rearranged in alphabetical order instead of the order they were originally in. The other 3 times out of 10, the number is tacked onto the track name, so your song is called "2 - Example Song Title" instead of "Example Song Title." This rearrangement is very annoying, especially with albums where one track is specifically intended to come right before another.
- There is no "shuffle", only "random". The difference is that on "shuffle", songs do not repeat. On "random", you may very well get the same song twice in a row, and will almost certainly repeat at least one song out of a list at least once.
- An odd bug I have run across: if you turn the volume down to 1 and then turn off the device, the volume will be at maximum when you turn it back on and will blast your eardrums out. It will still read as being at volume 1, however, and turning the volume up by one will bring the volume back down to a normal 2. I cannot for the life of me figure out how the makers of the device managed to do this.
The upside to this device: it plays music reasonably well. This is why I gave it a 3 instead of a lower score - it does what it is designed to do. If you are looking for a product that will do its job, this device will work. If you are looking for a product that will do its job well, look elsewhere.
