Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby KTFDVD1093 10.2-Inch Under-The-Cabinet LCD TV with Built-in DVD/CD Player and AM/FM Radio(White)Customer Review: great product if you get one that works Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this unit for my wife for Christmas to replace a dying AudioVox under-cabinet unit I bought for her 2 years ago.
The first Coby I received was defective. Wouldn't power up. I think it was a product defect as appeared to be shipped well from Electronics Express double boxed with lots of peanuts. The CSR from EA was excellent though and even paid for yhe return shipping.
Mounting was a little bit a problem b/c I took the quick route and drilled up from under the cabinet which reminded me of playing a game of Twister, but it took only 5 minutes or so. The template made locating the holes easy to drill, but my cabinets have an overhang, so you may need to make your own spacers to secure it properly. Too bad Coby didn't think of this as many cabinets overhang, but I had an easy fix using the old AudioVox ones.
Anyway, I was surprised to find this unit is capable of displaying both QAM and NTSC "digital" signals!!! This is HUGE and a very welcome surprise as it was able to find almost 100 digital channels when I plugged in my coax cable line from Comcast. This tv will be fine when things go digital come February. I even get all the local channels in HIGH DEF! OK, so the picture quality isn't that great out of the box, but if you tweak the settings, you can get a pretty decent HD picture all things considered. This unit works great with cable providers and over the air antenna, but you won't be able to get HD from a satellite provider as it doesn't have any HD inputs (i.e. RGB component or HDMI), but only coax. But it's perfect for Clear QAM! (do a search if you don't know what this means)
As for the sound, it's ok, kind of cheap and tinny sounding, but you can adjust the trebble and bass. I just bumped the bass up and the trebble way down. Now the sound is decent for a unit this size. It is more than loud enough for a small to medium sized kitchen although at low levels there is a bit of a jump in level.
The DVD quality is excellent. Almost as good as the HD channels, and much better than 480i stretched cable. The DVD and TV take about 8-10 seconds to "warm up", so keep this in mind if things like this bother you.
The radio is pretty good, but once again, the sound is tinny. But the problem here is I haven't found a way to adjust the trebble/bass. Probably can't :( but for me is ok since I got it mostly for tv. It does to a pretty good job picking up channels. Much better than the audiovox, but you're going to need a decent antenna to pull them in strong. Or if you plan on using this mainly as a radio, I'd go with a quality radio instead.
Overall, I'd give this product 5 stars if it weren't for the first one being defective. But I guess that's the chance you take when going with a name like Coby. ;)
