Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby High-Performance Professional Studio Monitor Headphones CV320 (Silver)Customer Review: Good features for the price, but unacceptable sound Summary: 1 Stars
When people review headphones they oftentimes write that they hear things in music with those headphones that they never heard before. With the Coby CV320, I had the opposite experience : I failed to hear things that I had always heard before. The problem with these headphones is a very unbalanced frequency response. Bass is strong, but the midrange is quite recessed, and the high frequencies are also quite recessed except for a narrow band of frequencies that are over-emphasized giving an artificial trebly quality. There is no upper treble at all, and this results in cymbals having no sizzle and bell-type instruments having a dead quality to them.
To explain the frequency response in another way, imagine yourself sitting in the audience listening to a rock band. With the Coby CV320, the bass guitar, cymbals, and wood blocks would be right in your face, and all other instruments (e.g. guitar, organ, drums, and vocals) would be back stage. It is those back-stage instruments that are playing the main musical content. As a result you get a very distorted image of what the music is about -- you won't properly hear the parts of the music that the composer intended.
On the plus side, these headphones have full-sized circumaural (around the ear) earpieces which are quite comfortable. However the headband is a hard plastic with no padding, so you would probably want to supply your own padding. The headphones also have volume controls on each earpiece which is unusual for this price.
In summary, the frequency response of these headphones is just too far out of balance; indeed, these headphones have the most out of balance frequency response that I have ever heard. If you need a really cheap pair of headphones, try the Coby CVH42 headphones. I got them for $2 at Dollar General, and they are much, much better headphones than the Coby CV320. As a matter of fact, they compare favorably to many $20 pair of headphones.
