Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby DP702 7-Inch Widescreen Digital Photo Frame (Woodgrain)

Customer Review: A fine low to mid-range frame.
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The price is right on this model. It is a full-featured frame, but the resolution is pitiful. But that is to be expected with a frame in this price range.

I was very impressed with this frame's diversity of input options. You can use SD cards, Compact Flash cards or even USB flash drives. For me, the USB option is best. I have so many USB drives lying around that I'll never use. So, putting one to use in this frame is a great way to save it from the landfill. It also means I don't have to waste one of my SD cards that I would normally use in my camera.

The fact that the resolution on this frame is so low means that you can resize large pictures down to a suitable resolution in order to fit a lot of pictures on a small-capacity flash drive. So, in that sense, the small resolution is not as much of a hindrance. However, unlike other digital photo frames, you do not have to change the resolution on your pictures. The frame does a fine job of maintaining the aspect ratio and even gives you the option from the menu to change aspect ratios.

But when it comes down to it, the limited resolution really is the major downfall of this photo frame. Images are adequate enough, but obviously pixellated even from a distance.

Other than that, the menus are easy to navigate and the frame does a fine job of finding photos, music and video on your media even if they are in subdirectories and what not. There is also a remote that you can use to navigate menus and skip music tracks or pictures from a distance.

The faux-woodgrain is cheap-looking, but nicer than the typical black that comes on frames in this price range.

All in all, this is a fine photo frame. If you are looking for something very classy, you'll most likely need to spend over $100. However, if you just want something to dynamically display photos or videos, this is probably a good choice.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I purchased the Phillips 10" (9.4" diagonal) version several years ago for a whopping $230. I was and am extremly satisfied with it. It is user friendly and the photo quality is very good. The screen is quite bright which really helps bring the uploaded photos to life. The size is also great-you can see it well from across the room as it sits on top of a side table. I see now the cost has come down to $113. Ok, now on to this Coby version which I got as a Vine Review customer. Since other people have left good descriptive reviews I will try to keep mine brief and to the point. I think this frame is pretty good and is a reasonable offer at only $44. It is not as user friendly or intuitive as the Phillips is and the picture quality is definitely no where near as good as my 3 yr old Phillips is. I think the Coby picture quality is a bit dark and definitely pixilated (grainy). I also like the bigger screen size of our old Phillips. So I really think that you need to decide what your budget is and what quality you're wanting or willing to accept. The Coby frame is attractive and functions ok, the picture quality is ok at best, but the cost is quite affordable. The Phillips is brighter and much clearer, it is more intuitive in function, but my larger version costs 2 1/2 times what this Coby costs. A similarly sized (7") Phillips costs almost twice what this 7" Coby costs. I very highly recommend the digital frame format with digital photgraphy technology. I haven't had any photos developed onto paper in years-the last time I used a traditional photo album book was over five years ago. It's really nice to have a set of varying photos to look at. Memory cards are so inexpensive now-a-days that it's really not an issue to not have built in memory. Just remember to catalog your photos on hard disks as back up storage so you don't loose precious photo memories.

Customer Review: I have mixed feelings about this digital picture frame

Overall it's a really cool concept. The main problem I had with it was that some of my photos appeared dark on the screen no matter how I adjusted the contrast and brightness settings. You need to plug it in to use it. The frame is made of average quality wood construction. Just about the same as the average picture frames that you buy in the big box stores. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the picture quality a 5 or 6. The box says it has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9.

Our little video clips played well, but again, the picture was darker than if I were playing the exact same video clip on my laptop or TV. I guess the real problem (if you want to call it a problem) I have with this item is that it's rather redundant. We already have ways of displaying all of this same detail on our computers and televisions. The only real advantage is that it is very quick to turn on and start using immediately. I plugged my SD memory card directly into the side slot, and away we went. The menus are easy to use and understand, and it even comes with a very user-friendly remote control. For ease of use, I would give this item an 8 or 9 on a scale of 1 to 10.

This frame connects to a USB connection so that you can plug it into your computer. Built-in memory comes with Model DP701-1G ONLY. The device I tested does not come with the built-in memory.

This is not something I would picture myself using everyday. It's more something that I could picture using at parties, weddings or showers to display photos relevant to the event using the slideshow mode.

I did not test the music mode, but the sound quality on our video clips was very good considering the size of the frame (7" wide screen), etc.

It has a kickstand to hold it up which seems to work fine.

Customer Review: Badly framed and not well hung
Summary: 2 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you're looking for an "el-cheapo" digital frame, you may have hit the jackpot with this one. Not only is it relatively low-priced, but it also comes with low quality picture reproduction, low quality sound, and badly thought out button placement.

To be fair, it takes flash drives and camera cards, and plays MP3s and videos and can do slideshows and tell you the time and date.

But...

The power cord makes the whole "hanging on the wall" thing a bit of a joke, the lack of internal memory is a pain I'd rather not have, and the music that comes out of the in-frame speakers certainly isn't the food of love.

The USB cord mentioned in the booklet is not included, so if you don't happen to have one handy you'll have to use flash drives and camera cards for picture storage.

Talking about photographs, this frame will take your 3MB memories and make them look like 70KB internet snapshots, so this may not be a good gift for your favorite photo-take-outerer.

Navigation is tricky and could be a lot easier, and the buttons and doo-dads are awkward to negotiate, especially as the button color blends in with the back of the frame.

I guess you could give this to your dear old Gran, especially if she has failing eyesight and hearing, and you were able to visit her daily to set it up and change the pictures, but in this high-tech world, anyone else would expect much better picture and sound quality.

Economically priced, and not worth the price tag.

Customer Review: Great overall value for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

Great overall value for the price ($30 & free shipping) after Thanksgiving '09.

As others have mentioned this model's picture resolution is not as high as more expensive models. Spend more money if you're looking for unsurpassed picture resolution. But if you're looking for a digital picture frame that provides an excellent value (features vs. price), this is a great choice in my opinion.

For those that are dissatisfied with the default picture quality, please try the display settings below. I experimented with different settings until I found a combination that was satisfactory to me. You may want to tweak the settings more based on your viewing preferences.

I found it very easy to use the remote to navigate through the menus and make adjustments. From the main menu screen, select the "Setup" icon (wrench & screwdriver). Then select "Display". There are 5 settings you can adjust. After trial and error, I settled on the following.

Brightness: 100
Contrast: 50
Hue: 50
Saturation: 50
Sharpness: 100

Also, when viewing a slideshow, I set my screen ratio to "Auto" to proportionately fill the 16:9 widescreen of the display. To adjust this press either the "Picture Mode" button on top of the frame itself or "Mode" on the remote. There are 3 choices: 4:3, 16:9, and Auto. The default ratio of 4:3 does not completely fill the display. 16:9 fills the display but stretches the picture out of proportion to do it. Auto proportionately zooms in on the picture to fill the display. Note: Obviously, since it zooms in on the picture, you will not be able to view the outer boundary of your original picture.
