Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby CA-747 Dual Position CD/MD/MP3 Cassette AdapterCustomer Review: Worked for a few months, broke, then I modified it to work. Summary: 4 Stars
As others have previously written, sometimes this has a problem with auto-reverse. I did not encounter that the first few months I've been using it. Suddenly it acted up just the way as others have explained. I have a 2002 Accord EX.
I did what J. Christofferson did in his review. Works well now, albeit, only on one side. The other side just hums. YMMV. There's also the noise of the gears but it gets drowned out when the music is on and the car is moving.
To sum up what others have stated, I did this:
1) remove 6 screws from the one side and arrange them so you can put them in again. It might not look like it but two of the screws are smaller.
2) flip it over and take out the 2 screws near the top.
3) slowly take off half of casing. I used the screwdriver that i used for the screws to help with this.
4) On the upper left side is a white plastic housing that pulls out. Pull it out and remove the gear that is screwed on.
5) Place the housing back and test the gears if they rotate properly.
6) Close it up, two screws back, flip it over, 6 screws back on and test it out in your car.
Hope that helps someone. Worked for me.
Customer Review: Don't take it apart! Summary: 3 Stars
Maybe I'm all thumbs, but when I tried to open the cassette to "fix" the auto-reverse problem, I met with disaster. First, the unit does NOT come apart neatly. The screws come out just fine, but when I tried to open the cassette, the internal components immediately jumped out of their assigned places and co-mingled with each other.
I do believe they are anarchists. I tried to pry the cassette open further to see if I could address the issue. No go. The head portion is firmly affixed and holds the cassette together.
Maybe I just didn't do it right, but I don't see how the unit could be opened without the internal parts shifting.
I gave up on the project and threw it away. I never got to try the product out, but it appears to be well-made (six screws holding the unit together) from the outside. The inner workings are almost all plastic, so I don't know how long it would function, although I can't imagine it would be under much stress or strain when used normally.
I only gave it three stars (based on price, advertised features, and basic construction) because I have no idea how it would have performed.
Customer Review: Amazing quality. Summary: 4 Stars
Before I had this, I had a generic cassette adapter. The sound was horrible and it made a terrible, tinny echo. I bought it for my Ford Taurus which costs $800 to add a CD changer to. My wireless FM adapter sounded better than my generic cassette adapter, and it was static city since the antenna is on the opposite side of the car (station wagon).
I was pleasantly surprised when I got this adapter to replace my old one. The sound quality is better than the strongest FM station here, and the coiled cord really reduces the mess in my car. I only had one problem with this, and I think that is because of my car stereo, but I will note it anyway.
After 10 minutes of playing, my car stereo would switch to side 2, then side 1, and display TDE1 and eject the tape. After getting very angry, I found a solution. Simply take the adapter apart, spray WD40 on all the gears, and remove the small gear assembly that prevents the rape from being rewound (was this even necessary? there is no physical tape so it doesn't matter if someone tries to rewind it). Problem solved!
I would definitely get this over any other adapter.
Customer Review: Best I've found Summary: 5 Stars
This is the 4th version of these adapters I've tried and none of the others sounded this good. (Sorry I don't have the names of those to avoid, but the last one was bought at Radio Shack) All of the others made considerable clicking/grinding noises as they turned inside the deck. This unit operates much quieter as well as transmits the sound MUCH better. one of the others I tried gave me the trouble swithching sides endlessly back & forth in auto-reverse decks like described in other reviews here. I've not needed to make any modification to this model- it just worked as expected with great sound quality. The coiled cord is nice, and the notch on the end for the cord to bend neatly as it comes out of the deck helps this one feed in completely without getting stuck or triggering the auto eject. I've never bothered to review anything, and this is not an expensive item. But having tried 3 others with such disapointing results I felt others should know this one is at least among the best. I got two more for my wife and daughter, and both experienced the same improvements in thier cars as well.
3 thumbs up!
Customer Review: clear and loud, but rattles a bit Summary: 3 Stars
Works well. I was surprised to find that this cassette adapter produces noticeably louder, and slightly clearer sound than my current one which is approximately 2 years old. I had always thought that these cassette adapters are completely passive and do not affect the sound quality. Obviously they do. I don't know whether it's my current one's sound has degenerated with aging, or the Coby is just better. Anyway, I'm quite satisfied. The coiled cord is also a big plus, making the cable management much easier, which is especially important in a car. When you're driving, any extraneous item that needs to be handled or requires your attention is a potential risk of danger.
But in one of the two cars I used this, the adapter makes a noticeable rattling noise when running. It must be a combination of both the adapter itself and the tape player. My old adapter does not show this difference.
There are cheaper adapters out there. At almost twice the price, I'm not sure if I can recommend this one to others. But I'm okay I bought it and happy with it as long as it works the way it does now.
