Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby CA-747 Dual Position CD/MD/MP3 Cassette Adapter

Customer Review: Some slight modification for perfection
Summary: 4 Stars

When I started with this tape adapter it worked flawlessly except for the small noise I heard (which I assume was the small platic wheels spinning). After about 100 hours of use the auto-reverse mechanism started to get very bad and constantly flipping back and forth at times. Like others, I searched the internet for a fix and learned to tape the auto-reverse mechanism down. This worked for another couple of weeks before the problem came back. I finally decided to test to see what I could remove and still have the tape adapter functional in my tape deck. It was a tedious process, but after much experimentation (and screwing those tiny screws) I have a perfect solution for myself. I removed everything except the metal head that interfaces with the stereo itself. All the gears, bands, plastic buttons and knobs GONE. All there is now is a platic tape shell and the metal head. It works flawlessly (so far). And it is pin-drop silent, assumedly because I removed all the moving parts. If it would have come like this from the manufacturer it would have recieved 5 stars, but me investing my time into it drops it down to 4. Although I understand that this might not work for every tape deck. Hopefully it can work for you. Oh, and the price is right... under [...] bucks with free shipping.

Customer Review: Excellent product.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using this Coby CA-747 Cassette Adapter for more than 2 years to use my car stereo to play audio of my DVD-player and CD-player. Until lately, my car tape player kept rejecting it out. I thought it was broken and I was about to buy this same product from Amaonz again. While reading some other people's reviews, I bump into R. Penny's feedback on 10/26/05 about the "skip" mode as following:

"One thing to keep in mind when using any product like this - some (but not all) car tape players have a "skip" mode. When a tape player's "skip" mode is active, it listens for silent portions of the tape. If it is detects any silence for more than a few seconds, it will automatically go into fast forward until it "hears" sound again. If your tape player has a "skip" mode, be sure to cancel this mode - i.e., put the player in "normal" play mode. Otherwise, you will find the tape player trying to "fast forward" over any silent portions of your audio feed."

This is exactly the problem that I was having. By turning off the "skip" mode of the car tape player, my car tape player does not reject the Coby Cassette Adapter anymore.

Again, even if it is indeed broken, I will buy the same product again. Very good product for the money.

Customer Review: One of the best I've seen
Summary: 5 Stars

I had first seen one of these on a friend's car and this concept really appealed to me for 2 reasons -
(1) Reuse of a 'thing' (the cassette player)
(2) Quality delivered (fm transmitters suck big time)
This particular one stands out because of negligible noise output and its dual positioning possibility; you don't have to look around for ones that have wires protruding one way or another (dual-positioning). there was a minor clicking noise when i first got it. now that the tape player head has gotten used to this 'pseudo-head' on the tape, the noise is also gone. the volume achievable is very impressive. thankfully, i inherited a very good sound system also. the couple of dollars you spend on this compared to a generic one on meritline is great investment indeed. i was also lucky in that meritline had run out of stock on adapters the day i was shopping. low and high volumes are awesome. the bass and treble are awesome at any volume. this should be your choice if
(1) you have a cassette and fm radio and are rethinking about which technology to adopt
(2) if you have already decided on an adapter and are looking for a brand
As for durability, I really can't comment as I am only a owner for the past 2 months.

Customer Review: Total junk destroyed my car's cassette deck
Summary: 1 Stars

I was hopeful that this would allow me to listen to the music on my iPod while driving. Reviews looked good and the FM solution clearly doesn't pan out for most.

I plugged this baby into my car cassette deck. It immediately made a rattling noise - sort of a ratcheting. It didn't sound good. I plugged in my iPod and pushed play. My BMW M5's screen then displayed "Tape Error". I tried to eject this piece of Coby junk. No luck. Great, how this $10 piece of junk is stuck in my car with the wire hanging out. I gently opened the tape deck door and pressed it in place and made sure the connector was firmly plugged in. This time, I got music from my iPod! Great! I turned up the volume on my iPhone - wow distortion. Oh wait, turn down the volume on the iPhone and use the car to raise the volume. Hey sounds nice. I changed songs. Cool. Listen for 30 seconds. Now the sound start to sound like total static and is losing all quality. The longer it plays, the worse it sounds. I try another song. Total junk! Oh my gosh.

I spent the next 20 minutes with a flash light and various implements trying to extract this thing from my car's cassette deck. It finally came out and now my car's deck is broken.

Don't go there.

Customer Review: having problems with an auto-reverse tape deck?
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product and found like many other people out there that if you have a tape deck with an auto-reverse feature, that you'll have some problems with just about any cassette adapter. After looking online, I found out how to fix most brands, but not this one. So after tooling around for about half an hour, I figured out how to get this cassette adapter to work in an auto-reverse tape deck. If you open the adapter and look inside, you'll see a small gear between one of the center teeth wheels and the little assembly that contains the guide wheel near the edge of the adapter that can only rotate in one direction. Remove this small gear. This will allow the tape to spin freely in either direction. If you look at the guide wheel, you'll notice that it can shift to two positions. One that protrudes closer to the outside of the adapter and one that has it sit more inside the adapter. Tape this piece so that it stays permanently in one of these two positions. That guide wheel moving is how the auto-reverse in your tape deck knows to activate. After I made these changes, I found that the adapter worked in my Ford tape deck flawlessly. No need for an FM transmitter, after all! Hope this helps those of you with the same problem!
