Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby 1.5-Inch Digital TFT LCD Photo Keychain DP151WHT (White)

Customer Review: VERY inconvenient to load photos, poor instructions and tech support
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased three of these as gifts at another retailer and will be returning two (I didn't save the package for the first one, so I guess I'm stuck with it). You have to be fairly skilled with computers (I am...but the intended recipients are not) to install the software, especially since I had to call tech support and download updated software off of their site after the included software (for Windows XP) didn't work and gave me a strange error message obviously written by someone who doesn't speak English. The tech support people were easy to reach by phone and very friendly, but they gave quick answers and did not stay on the phone with me while I tried their solutions, so I had to make several calls. Then it took me about 20 more minutes to figure out how to get the software to start. I did finally manage to get the photos loaded after about an hour of total work. The finished product is decent, and it's a wonderful concept, but I will search and wait for a digital photo keychain that is MUCH more user-friendly.

Customer Review: Great for what you are paying for
Summary: 4 Stars

Great item as a replacement for the purse/wallet picture stack. With 3-4hr charge time, should be able to show plenty of people favorite photos of kids, grandkids, vacation spot, family, ect.

4 star because it requires charging only by USB port. Recognize at this price point a charger could not be supplied, but a solution to work with a common charger style would be nice. Especially when this is a gift for those not tech savvy, or actually without a computer (grandparents and parents - yes, no computer).

Nice requirement to hold down On/Off button to turn on - no accidental battery drain.

Recommend using something like free IrfanView to mass convert desired pre-cropped pictures to 128x128 byte size. Not sure how well the included software does it, or how slow it would have been.

But when already done, the upload is very quick. Software and instructions don't match up exactly, and app buttons used aren't in order of use, but can still figure it out.

Customer Review: load photos before gifting
Summary: 3 Stars

If you are giving this to someone, it is probably because they are not tech-savy, yet you want them to be able to carry pictures around. Do them a favor and load an album before giving it, because it is possible they may never figure out how to add pictures. USB should be plug and play, but this device is not. You open their program on your computer, then import jpegs, etc. The software lets you zoom in so that faces can be seen on the low resolution screen, then transfers the image to the device. The software doesn't work on OS 10.5, and tech support was happy to work with me first by email then phone, before giving up. No biggie, I just dug up an old XP box from the closet. I am not sure that the recipient will learn how to change functions between charge and load. There are just too many steps involved to make this a fun toy for the target audience. It would make a fine toy for someone comfortable with these issues, but that person likely already carries around a camera phone, laptop, etc.

Customer Review: A neat little gadget
Summary: 4 Stars

I just bought one of these from Best Buy, and the cd had both XP and Max software on it. The software is kind of ghetto looking, and the "Upload completely!" message indicates that there was obviously not much software quality control, but it works. The only thing, if you unplug the keychain while the software is up, and you forgot a picture so you replug it in while the software is still open, the download will not work. You will have to close the software and reopen it once you have reconnected and selected "usb update".

I got this as a gift for my fiancee's mother, so I hope it'll hold out until Xmas (8 days to go). Will update if I find a problem with it. Otherwise, everything is working and the pictures uploaded fine. Also cheaper and less bulky looking than the ones at Sharper Image and Brookstone (probably less quality with this one, but my mother-in-law to be is scared of technology, so if she doesn't use it $30 is much less to be upset over than $60).

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS XP!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I was so excited to purchase two of these for my parents, who are going to be first time grandparents soon. While the devices themselves seem to work OK in that they show the 2 sample pics, the software DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS XP. I wish I had read the "fine print" of all the customer reviews, because this seems to be a common problem.

While the 6Ave policy is to issue replacements only, I actually found a nice person in customer service (Ray) who agreed to give me a refund--I told him that I had tried both, and had read about this being an issue with others, so I didn't want replacements because it wasn't likely they'd work either.

It's unfortunate because this seems to be a good product. I see that not everyone has had this problem, so just be aware. It's embarassing for gifts you give not to work so just a word to the wise.

Perhaps soon Coby can get the software fixed so that it's compatible with Windows XP.
