Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby 1.5-Inch Digital TFT LCD Photo Keychain DP151WHT (White)Customer Review: Installed and running on Windows XP Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the Coby DP-151 PhotoViewer, even though I read the reviews claiming the software didn't run on Windows XP, because I found the other reviews quite favorable, and I could always install the software on my wife's Mac.
However, after experimenting on my XP laptop, I found the instructions were missing a few steps. Here's what I did to get the software working:
1. Plug the PhotoViewer into a USB port to fully charge the battery.
2. Install the software from the CD.
3. When the PhotoViewer is fully charged, disconnect it from the USB port
4. Re-start the computer.
5. Plug the PhotoView into a USB port. The screen on the PhotoViewer prompts for either USB charge or USB update. Select USB update.
6. Run the program installed in step 2. It should now work.
I found it fairly easy to select, size and download photos to the PhotoViewer, and am quite impressed with the quality of the display for such a reasonably priced item.
I hope this information is helpful for other XP owners.
Customer Review: Not quite there Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased the product for my Mother-in-law, hoping she could carry a pre-loaded collection of pictures with her.
Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy. Installation of the software was difficult. Once this was resolved it was an easy task to select and upload the photos - unfortunately I discovered that the upload software "automatically" crops the photos, and "what you see" is not "what you get" when you select pictures. Each picture had to be manually cropped using the software.
Once the photos had been selected and manually cropped, the keychain worked, although the battery did not appear to hold a charge very well, and there is no "auto off" feature. There is an "Auto on/off" feature which allows you to turn the device on at a specific time and off at a specific time. Otherwise, if you turn it on and forget to turn it off, you run out the battery.
Overall, it's ok if you don't mind spending time with it to get it to work, but don't plan on getting it for someone else.
I returned mine.
Customer Review: Don't waste your money or time Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this as a gift for my grandmother and planned on setting it up for her before giving it to her. I read some reviews, which were mixed. Seemed like PC users were having the most trouble. Since I use a Mac I thought I would give it a try (only $20, what do I have to lose...). First problem: I couldn't install the software on my macbook because the disk is 8cm vs. the standard 12cm and cannot be installed in a macbook. I moved to our other mac and was able to install the software. I hooked up the keychain and charged it for the recommended four hours. Then I set the time and checked out all the functions -- simple and looked easy enough for my grandmother to figure out. So far so good. I set the device to update and opened the software, after carefully reading all the instructions I picked out the photos and tried to upload them. Each time I pressed the upload button the software quit. I tried a different USB port, same thing. After several tries I packaged it back up and am taking it back tomorrow. What a frustrating waste of time!!
Customer Review: It will work, after some tweaking! Summary: 3 Stars
I, like many other reviewers, could not get this to work on my Windows XP machine. However, the instructions on the Coby USA website finally allowed me to use this keychain--not sure why these instructions were not included with the product. First step is to use the included CD to install the software. Then, you connect your keychain to your computer using the included cable. When the keychain turns on, select "USB Update." Voila! The computer recognizes the keychain as a flash drive (which is what it is, of course). Finally, you run the photo viewer software, which allows you to choose pictures from your computer's hard drive and transfer them to the keychain.
The quality of the photos on the keychain are not super fantastic, but they are better than I would have expected for a $20, 1.5" display. You will want to choose pictures that have fairly close up faces in them (assuming you're using it for pictures of people)--if the face is small on the photo, it's going to be totally indistinguishable on the keychain.
Customer Review: My Opinion Summary: 4 Stars
After reading other people's reviews about the Coby I was hesitant to get one. But I've had mine for a few days now and I am very happy with it. Nothing about it was hard to do. I installed the software, plugged in the Coby then ran the picture viewer in that order. You must first choose the photos from your own library then they get added to the left side. Then out of the pics you just added you must select the ones you want to add to the Coby and they get added to the right side. Then you click the button on the top right corner of the screen and it begins the actual process.
It would be nice if a protector or cover was made for this because the screen is very easy to scratch. You may also need to crop the photos so they are viewable the way you like. I removed the chain and hook attached to it and it is hooked to my keychain by the small circle, you'll see if you get one.
Overall, I do like it. I think that the price is still to high for it though. I would pay around $10 for it from a store.
