Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Digital Fiber Optical (Toslink) to Digital Coaxial (S/PDIF) ConverterCustomer Review: Didn't work for me. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this item thinking that it could decode the digital only sound out of my LCD 47" into analog stereo to my old stereo system. It does not, nor connecting it to a sound card with toslink in and feeding it out analog to my stereo will work also. This product probably works as indicated, I will never know. It seems very cheaply made with no indicators like an LED if the item is getting any power or if its even working. I could of sent it back, but for what I paid for it, it didn't seem like worth the time. So I opted to buy a sound card which may do what I'm looking for it to do.
I did find out something interested when I contacted HT Omega tech support about purchasing one of their sound card models for the purpose of decoding my tv's digital out signal to my stereo. This is what he wrote back.
Hello Sir.
Thanks for interest in Striker7.1
In this case, Yes and No
Striker7.1 doesn't provide AC3 signal such as Dolby Digital or dts decoding
from optical input.
For licensing and copyright protection purposes, soundcard manufacturers are
effectively prevented from adding DD/DTS decoders to their products. The
reasoning is that the only legal use of DD/DTS decoders is for playback of
licensed soundtracks from DVD movies. In your PC, a DVD player software must
decode your DD/DTS soundtrack, NOT the soundcard. Therefore, as far as I
know, there is no PCI type sound card which can AC3 signal from S/PDIF
input. Because of the above-mentioned licensing and copyright protections,
this is not possible.
But Striker7.1 can decode 2ch PCM signal input. If your TV audio output can
be set to PCM, you can monitor with front output of sound card . Please
check your optical output specification of your TV.
If you need further information, please let me know.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
HT OMEGA - Tech Support
With that being said, I am looking into purchasing the Geffen Digital to Analog Stereo converter. It may do what I'm looking for it to do.
