Customer Review: Good Fit But Leaves Permanent Oily Shine

After almost a year of using this silicone keyboard cover, I cannot recommend it. Initially, my impressions were only positive:

This Clear Silicone Keyboard Cover Skin fits my MacBook Air keyboard perfectly. It stays flat and the LED lights of the keyboard shine through. It feels great to type on it and I like the frosted look which makes it looks discreet and blends in with the brushed aluminum. I can't imagine typing without it because from years of experience typing on laptop keyboards, they get dirty so fast and dust will always creep in. Plus, the oils of the fingertips will eventually make the keys shinier and with black keys, it will be very noticeable.
This is a generic product that comes sealed in a clear plastic sheet bag. There is no branding (words, description, graphics) on the outside package. It was a toss up between getting this generic brand or the one from Elago. But for $10 vs. $14 (both including shipping), it was the lowest price.

Now, I realize that this silicone material leaves an oily, shiny residue that *cannot* be removed. One of the main reasons why I wanted this keyboard cover is so that oils from my finger tips won't make the keys slick and shiny. But what's the use of having a keyboard cover when all the keys get shiny anyway? In fact, *any* silicone keyboard cover will eventually coat your keys with oil. This is a major disappointment. Every key is affected by this silicone oily shine but the most affected are the space bar, command/option/control keys, the caps lock, and the home keys (asdf jkl;).
Next time, I'm going to try the Moshi ClearGuard keyboard cover made of thermoplastic urethane and hopefully that doesn't leave any oily residue.
