Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cables Unlimited PCM-2296-06 HDMI to DVI D Cable, 6 feet

Customer Review: It's a cable, gosh darnit!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first went looking for an HDMI -> DVI cable at a national big box retail store, only to discover that the cheapest one they had was $70! I had expected to get ripped off, but I'd expected something "reasonable" like a 500% or 600% markup - not 4000%! I was so shocked by the blatant robbery that I couldn't restrain myself - I laughed out loud and giggled my way out the door empty handed.

One quick hop over to amazon.com, and this little baby was headed my way. $11 still strikes me as a bit high, but hey, I know amazon's gotta make a buck too. This cable really does what it's supposed to - please, PLEASE don't be fooled by retail employees who push solid gold Huckster Cables at 10 times the cost.

As for some details:

I got this thing to display output from my XBox 360 on my computer monitor. If you're thinking of doing the same, please note that the XBox 360's proprietary "composite + component" cable is required for audio out when you're using an HDMI -> DVI cable. Using that cable, you can get either audio either from the optical or RCA plugs.

There's one little snag, though - on my XBox 360, at least, the "composite + component" cable physically obstructs the HDMI port. There's just no way to plug both cables in at once.

After googling around a bit, I learned that you could actually remove the plastic casing from the XBox cable and give yourself enough room. I did this, and everything works great.

Customer Review: Cheap and it works
Summary: 5 Stars

Not much to say on a review for a DVI-D to HDMI cable. It's construction is solid, looks like brass on the tips, probably supposed to be gold, but I highly doubt it for this price, and unless it corrodes, could care less. The cable itself is quite thick (7mm), so it's a bit hard to bend, but that is both good and bad, as it protects the cable more, but makes it harder to work with.

This product is in use with a HP dm1z laptop feeding to an Acer 23" monitor, pretty standard, I would think.

Pros: -Low cost
-Reasonable quality
-Works without flaws (for about a month so far)

Cons: -Stiff cable causes slight stress on the HDMI port if I am not careful

Bottom line: It does it's job at a low cost, what more could you want?

Side note: For those of you that have been told that cable quality matters for HDMI cables, you have been lied to. HDMI, DVI, and even digital sound inputs/outputs are all digital signals. This means that the signal does not degrade with distance or cable quality appreciably. The level of difference you will see and hear between these and name brand cables that Best Buy will try to sell you is completely inappreciable. /rant

Customer Review: Fuzzy image well below VGA quality
Summary: 2 Stars

I used this cable to connect my desktop to my HDTV. The image came out fuzzy, with text looking particularly blurred. While I was disappointed, I figured it was an HDTV, not a computer monitor, and that I'd deal with it.

A few days later I happened to plug my laptop into the HDTV using a VGA cable, and the difference was astonishing: clear, crisp text and vivid images.

My desktop has a mid-level NVidia card, while my laptop is running one of those puny onboard graphics chipsets. Furthermore, DVI/HDMI is supposed to be inherently better than an analog VGA connection.

Clearly, the problem is in the cable.

Will you get an image on your HDTV and be able to watch movies? Yes. Is this the cheapest DVI-to-HDMI cable in the Amazon catalog? Yes. Will you get what you pay for? YES. This cable is worth exactly the price of the item (but not the shipping). But you'll be losing the value of your fancy HDMI TV -- not worth saving $20 when you've plunked several hundred (or thousand) on that fancy TV.

Customer Review: Best way to connect your LCD TV to your notebook
Summary: 5 Stars

I had bought an LCD TV recently and was looking up ways to hook up my lappy to the TV. The good ol S-video and analog connections was one option. But having a digitial lappy and a digital TV it didn't make sense to use the analog option and lose video quality. S-video and analog outputs have never been my favorites with previous bad experiences being watching pics on my analog TV from my digicam.
Looked up a host of options and on a post came up with this option. I have a Dell Latitude with a docking station. The Dell docking station is an advanced piece of equipment. These inexpensive piece ($6) of wires hook up to my lappy (DVI) and the other part to my TV (HDMI). The result is no loss of quality. The TV output is as good as my notebook display.
I have had no problems using these cables in contrast to some posts. I have been using these for over 4 months now and have enjoyed the movies and games. Easily the best way to hook up a digital TV to a notebook.

Customer Review: Perfectly Fine
Summary: 4 Stars

I am using this cable to go from a PPC Mac mini to my Sharp 1080p HDTV. When I first hooked it up there was no signal, and I thought it might have been that the Mini needed a dual link DVI-I cable. After talking with a guy at the local Mac store, however, I realized that I just needed to adjust the output resolution. Turning off the "TV Overscan" in the System Preferences allowed a few different resolutions to show on the TV. The cable currently is giving me a pretty darn good picture. No noise, no dropping of picture. Really, any HDMI cable under 25 feet (maybe even 50) should never give you any problems if they are up to HDMI spec.

This particular cable is pretty beefy, but does seem to have a fairly cheap quality to it, though for under $15 who can really expect any different? In short, it is a cable, it does what it needs to do, works as it should, and nothing more. In this day and age, that is sometimes a lot to ask.
