Customer Review: Excellent Cooler
Summary: 5 Stars
The Evercool line of products is very good, and this 'cooler' is right up
there with the best. Significantly more CFM airflow than stock Intel fans
for 478 sockets. It does NOT fit on top of the Intel heatsink, don't even
try or you will break it. Use the provided copper-core rectangular heat-
sink, and I recommend using a sufficient amount of high-quality thermal
compound like Artic Silver. Evercool doesn't supply enough to provide a
sufficient heat-transfer substrate between the heatsink and CPU. If you
apply too much, you will lose heat transfer uptake to the heatsink then
fry your CPU. I'm using a Prescott 3.80E on an Asus P4P800 SE motherboard
and it does stay cool. The correct amount of thermal compound to apply is
a THIN layer about 1/64" (about the thickness of your thumbnail). I know
because I'm an electronic technician and heat sink many different kinds
of components in manufacturing and repair. I have thermocouples, probes
and infrared sensors to measure actual performance and operating charac-
teristics. See picture in customer images. It is a bit noisy, can quiet
down with thermal management like ASUS has. These Prescott's at and above
3Ghz run quite hot, better safe than sorry!
Adding additional cooling devices like slot fan, case fan, and the newer
bay fan will definitely increase the service life of your system, result-
ing in fewer operational problems because of thermal damages operating
components out of temperature specification. The fan for the Evercool IS
replaceable if need be, a VERY nice feature if it ever fails. You won't
have to reinstall the whole cooler to the CPU, just unscrew the fan assy.
