Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cables Unlimited 6-Foot HDMI Male to Male Cable (PCM-2295-06)Customer Review: A good deal on a good cable Summary: 4 Stars
I recently bought a 42" Sharp Aquos LCD, so to maximize its performance, I upgraded my cable box to the HD box ($6/mo.), and bought two of these cables (one for the cable box, and one for my future HD DVD player).
I read a lot of the reviews of these and more expensive HDMI cables, and I opted to go the cheap route. I had a $25 gift certificate from my birthday, and with free super saver shipping, both cables cost me about $3 out of pocket.
I'm very happy with the image quality I get from these cables. There doesn't seem to be much difference (if any) than the signal I get from the component cables that came from with the cable box. In fact, when I change channels, there is a slight "delay" where the image loses brightness for a second, then fades up. I guess that's just the nature of a digital signal, though. With the component cables, I got a "freeze" for a second when I changed channels, so, six of one... But I like that I can get audio & video to the set through one cable.
Ulitimately, these cables work fine. I agree with other reviewers who say to avoid the designer cables unless you have money to spare. My guess is that the super-expensive cables probably would make somewhat of a noticeable difference, but not enough to justify spending $100 more.
I would also add that these cables should work just fine for anyone who plans on hooking their equipment up and leaving it alone. They do have a stiffness to them, and if you are planning on connecting and disconnecting them to different devices regularly, you might want to go with a more flexible and longer warrantied cable (though, these do have a 1 year limited warranty). Plus, a little more flexibility would be helpful in bundling my TV cables, though it's certainly not a reason to avoid these cables, especially considering the price.
All in all, a very good cable for a very good price. 4 stars would have been 5 if the cable was a bit more flexible.
Cables Unlimited makes a good product. This is the second cable purchase I've made from them. I also bought one of their Firewire 800 cables for an external HD, and it has worked flawlessly.
Customer Review: Be careful when buying HDMI cables Summary: 2 Stars
While I always have believed "You get what you pay for", there are some products that you can skimp on. HDMI cables don't appear to be one of them.
While I refuse to throw down $50 to $100 on an HDMI cable, I won't ever buy another $10 cable again.
I should start by saying that I am a "professional troublshooter". I have been in product support and IT for many many years, know how to read manuals and have more patience than anyone I know. Here's my story:
I have a new Sony Bravia and bought two of these cables. One for the Comcast cable box, the other for a Blue Ray player (that I don't have yet.)
1. I connected everything and switched to the HDMI 1 input...no signal found.
2. I moved over to HDMI 2...no signal found. Moved to 3 and 4...same thing.
3. I tried the second HDMI cable, same thing.
4. I took both cables and the box in the den and connected them to my 26" Samsung. No problem at all. Now I am bummed....is my new Sony defective??
5. I took the cable box and cables back to the Sony...same issues.
6. After a couple of hours of drinking beer and screwing with it, I suddenly have connection. Yeehaw! But wait...
7. On the next day, I get my surround sound system, VCR and a few other things set up, which required some rearranging and connecting/disconnecting. Guess what? Again, no signal when I was done.
8. I finally give in and go to Walmart and buy another HDMI cable (a Phillips.)
9. I replaced the HDMI cable with the new one and bingo...the connection was detected immediately.
10. I disconnected, reconnected, changed inputs, etc. There were no problems at all. It was connected every time, right away.
All is not lost. I can apparently still use these cables on my 26" Samsung, but the Sony didn't like them for some reason.
I'm giving them 2 stars because on the Samsung they work fine, and worked well on the Sony for the short time that they actually worked. Just be careful.
Customer Review: Great HDMI cable - don't waste 50 bucks on premium cables Summary: 5 Stars
This cable delivers digital signals without any flaw to an HDMI capable device. It shows no degradation compared to more expensive cables. It does feel a little loose in the connections, but it does work fine. A clear winner.
I've read several reviews where the users complained about the signal quality drawing comparisons with component video as an example. I'm not an expert but what I have notices on my 2 HDTVs, 4 DVD players and 3 cable boxes is that the HDMI signal is only better than component video if the original signal is in digital format and no artifact is needed to upscale the signal. So in summary, standard definition TV will look worse with HDMI because of the up converting processor in the cable box. You can easily notice that effect by switching to the RCA cable or component for the exact same channel. If the same comparison is made with a true HD channel, the HDMI connection will blow any analog connection away.
For DVD playing, component video has similar quality to HDMI. DVD players with upscalling will have some improvement using HDMI but most of the improvement is due to the upscalling itself (try OPPO 981, it's a great player). Final comment, if you use Scientific Atlanta cable boxes, try to get a newer one (4250 series as an example). The new boxes have much faster processors and HDMI has a decent quality for standard definition channels but it still shows the upscalling artifacts on scenes with fast movement and fast color changes.
Customer Review: Great value on good cables Summary: 4 Stars
I have an aversion to paying $70.00 for a single HDMI cable, so I was glad to find these at such a wonderful price. They arrived quicky in packaging that points to their 'generic' origin -- probably made by one overseas factory and sold under dozens of names. I plugged one in to my HD DirecTV DVR and then into a 52-inch JVC TV. Going back and forward between composite connections and the HDMI connection shows a moderate but visible amount of picture enhancement; more than enough to warrant the price of the HDMI cable.
Then, just to see if the more expensive brand-name cable is worth the cost, I borrowed one from a friend who always buys Monster cables. And, while it is impossible to comnect two HDMI cables side-by-side from the same component, if did a series of fast swaps The result? The more expensive brand provides a noticeable increase in the color levels over this low-cost cable. Probably in the 10-15% range of an increase. Plus I noticed an increase in audio quality... just a bit, and mostly deeper bass sounds.
But, that being said, just the increase in quality from my older composite cables and audio cables -- not to mention dropping down from 5 connectors (R, G, B, audio In and audio Out) to the single cable is more than worth the price.
Buy these not for be-all, end-all videophile quality, but buy them for a good-quality HDMI cable at a very attractive price.
Customer Review: Buy this cable if you're smart Summary: 5 Stars
I rarely write reviews, but in this case I felt compelled to try and prevent an unsuspecting public from being suckered by the marketing campaigns of products like Monster Cable, which is no better than this one but costs five times more.
First let me say this cable works great. It appears to be substantially constructed, and gives a superb picture on my HDTV. There is absolutely no reason to spend any more money than this on an HDMI cable.
People -- wake up! This is DIGITAL technology. The only thing that travels along this cable are 0's and 1's. There's no such thing as a good 0 or a bad 1. If the bits that go in one end come out the other, then no other cable, regardless of price, quality, or overengineered "features" that no one needs, can perform better.
If you really, really, want to spend 75$ on an HDMI cable, here's my suggestion. Send me $50. I'll send you one of these cables. You'll save twenty bucks and get exactly what you wanted, which is an HDMI cable that works perfectly. As for the rest of the money, at least it will go to a good cause (me) instead of lining the pockets of a corporation that plays its customers for fools.
