I have been deeply entrenched in the audio world for quite some time; at least I know enough to be dangerous. In the analogue domain, cables become even more important, such as these combination audio and video component cables. Why? Because with analogue, the signal is created in a device that is sometimes a small distance from the receiving, or amplifying source; that means the source signal is sent in an analogue format through a long cable, and along the way, that signal is subject to noise and interference, whether it be electro-magnetic, or radio etc. Since the signal is then amplified many times over when it hits the receiver, or amplifier, any noise that was picked up along the way is amplified as well. Studios go to great lengths to produce the highest gain signal they can (without distortion) while reducing the noise levels. (Signal to noise ratio)
Fortunately with today's high quality sources such as CD and DVD players, the noise is kept to a minimum, but that does not have any effect on the possibility of the interference being picked up along the way, while it is traveling through the cable. That is why high quality cables are so important.
This cable set is huge when compared to a standard cable set. I would venture to say that these compare well when set up alongside other way more expensive cables. How they can put 24K gold plating on the ends, and provide such a well built cable, can only mean one thing, overseas inexpensive manufacturing has invaded the Monster domain. Just to look at them they shout quality. The picture doesn't do them any justice. I was surprised at the overall look as soon as I opened the box.
When hooking these up to your gear, you may or may not notice a difference right away, but the interference shielding alone make the purchase well worth it. Due to high signal to noise ratios today, you may not hear that much difference in the middle of the sound, but when it quiets down, in between passages at high volume levels that is when the noise level becomes a problem. For such a small amount of money, you cannot afford to have a cheaply made set, ruining the quality sound of your gear.
If I had to decide whether to get the cheaply made cables for a few dollars, or the monster set for two hundred dollars, I thank my lucky stars that there are quality alternatives for a fraction of the price, and these Cables To Go 98036's are a shining example of high quality for a lot less. Highly recommended.
