Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cables To Go - 28012 - 10ft Pro Series HD15 M/M SVGA Monitor Cable with Ferrites (Black)

Customer Review: You get what you pay for...
Summary: 2 Stars

Like many here I purchased this VGA cable with the expectation of connecting a laptop to an HDTV. Since I couldn't wait for the cable to arrive soon enough I purchased one locally from Fry's Electronics (for more than twice the price + tax). The Fry's cable has worked well and aside from the price I have no real problem with it.

That said, I received my Amazon order today from HDE and immediately noticed some significant issues:
1. The cable gauge (diameter) was noticeably thinner.
2. While the product illustration displays "ferrites" (2) one on either connector and the description mentions "ferrites" (plural) several times, the cable only arrived with one ferrite on one connector.
3. One of the connector retaining screws is slightly bent and will not align through both holes on the connector, it's virtually useless.
4. Cable length was measurably shorter as well. Both cables are described as 10' long. The Fry's cable measures 9'-11" and the Cables to Go measures 9'-5".
5. When comparing picture quality, the Cables to Go comes up short here too. As several others here have described, picture quality ranged from "snowy" to noticeably "fuzzy" and most definitely inferior.

Sometimes there is no way to know if you are buying a "bargain" or just getting short changed. In this case the "Cables to Go 10' SVGA" cable is going to go... right back.

Customer Review: Are you using a TV as a computer monitor?
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this cable because I just bought a new LCD TV and want to see how it can work as a computer monitor. I plugged my laptop to a computer monitor before. Everything shows up instantly like a clone monitor; I didn't have to do a thing. So I was expecting the same this time.

When I plugged it in, nothing happened. TV's PC input says no signal. I messed around with Display settings. Finally the TV is getting a signal but not showing it -- that is, the screen is still black. After further messing, wondering if my TV's PC connection is bad, suddenly, my desktop background showed up. Nothing else, though; no cursor, no open windows. Nothing but the desktop picture.

Finally, I found out from the internet that you must use your graphics driver interface inside Display settings to configure the screen.
For my TV, it doesn't handle high resolutions and stays black; when I lower my resolutions, it shows just fine. The TV shows just the desktop background as extra screen space. If you open a big window and drag it along the edge of your screen all four sides, it will eventually show up on the TV. It's very neat actually!

Anyway, my point is, it's not the cable's fault; the cable is working fine. And it's really, really thick and heavy duty. I've paid 4 times the money in the past for such cables. This is a tremendous deal, totally worth it.

Customer Review: Defective, useless garbage
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought one of these from HDE to replace an SVGA cable that was shorter, but working perfectly. When I received it, I noticed that although the photo falsely advertises a cable shielded at both ends, and the description claims "ferrites" (plural) for shielding, the actual cable has a ferrite shield at only one end.

I also noticed the cheap construction - the metal plugs and mounting screws are embedded in warped rubber, so they don't line up correctly. With a lot of jiggling and holding the cable at an angle, I was able to get a picture, but with some of the horizontal rasters corrupted. Without physically holding it in place... no picture at all, even with the screws bolted in.

I contacted the vendor and they graciously offered to send a free replacement... with strong encouragement I should post a 5-star review for their making good on their defective merchandise. Okay. That cable just arrived today... and it too is defective. It delivers the green and red channels, but not the blue channel. And everything on screen is blurred and ghosted horizontally, making text difficult to read.

I'm giving up on this company and their defective merchandise. They've wasted enough of my time and money. I strongly advise you spend a couple more bucks elsewhere, for a product that actually works.

Customer Review: Poor quality cable
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this cable to connect my laptop to a projector which I had just purchased. When I received the cable I was dissapointed to find that connection ends on the cable were warped. The whole connector piece, including the metal was bent so that the front was rounded instead of flat, which made it difficult to sit it flush against my laptop. I connected it anyway, and although I had fuss with it a bit, it was working after a while.

I had my laptop on my bed where I was sitting, every time I moved just a little bit the laptop would shift and the connection would come loose and I'd have to adjust it again. It came loose for the last time when I discovered to my dismay that one of the internal metal prongs had broken off. I hope it did not break off inside my laptop, because if it did, the connection to my laptop is now shot.

This is a cheap cable, and it's very cheap quality. If you're going to hook this cable up once and never touch it again, it might be worth it to get it. But if you think this cable is going to be moving around at all, I definitely would not get this cable because it will give you nothing but a headache.

Customer Review: Does not support EDID (Detection of video modes), adds ghosting
Summary: 1 Stars

If you are looking to extend the length of your computer's LCD monitor, DO NOT BUY THIS CABLE.

I work in IT and needed to extend the cable length of a client's monitor to reach around their desk to connect to a Windows 7 machine. VGA uses a feature called EDID ([..]) which allows the computer to automatically detect the available resolutions your monitor supports. This cable apparently does not fully support EDID data and therefore does not pass the native resolution of your LCD screen to the computer. This means the computer cannot set the correct resolution of your screen to give the the sharpest picture possible, and instead chooses a generic mode that may work but usually looks terrible.

I also noticed an immediate picture degradation when plugging this cable in, with a bad ghosting effect. It may work in some situations, but you really get what you pay for. Every now and then I try to avoid this lesson, but time and time again I get a kick in the pants. Hopefully this can help you avoid a bad buy.
