I bought this because my HDTV's manual said that the audio for devices connected via HDMI would pass through to my amplifier in stereo rather than full HD (5.1 or 7.1) surround.
Either the HDMI audio signal is being passed completely to the amplifier, or the Pro-Logic interpreter on the amplifier is able to reconstruct the 5.1 or 7.1 audio. I can't tell a difference between the audio being transmitted via the optical or HDMI connections. So, I'm currently not using this device... although it's in my set up with all of the components connected.
Having said all that.... The device is very easy to set up. I like that it has buttons on the front as well as being able to select the desired component using the remote.
My HDTV has only one component video input, so this will be handy if I ever buy anything without an HDMI connection.
