This was a pretty good price compared to local stores. And the local discount stores were all out of this type of memory. So Amazon turned out to be the best deal all around.
I installed this memory, and ran the RAM MEMORY test from within the BIOS setup on my HP laptop, and it checked out okay.
One thing I didn't like was how this was packaged for shipment. It was packed like a book, no bubble wrap. Granted, there are no moving parts like a hard drive, but the connections on this are microscopic, and can be delicate. This is still DELICATE ELECTRONICS, and needs to be in a layer of small bubble wrap to absorb shock due to rough handling in shipment. The carriers see "Amazon" on the box-sized package and assume it's a book, and throw it around accordingly.
IMPORTANT NOTES ON SPEED:
This item is PC2-6400 with a CAS latency (CL) of 6. I used it to replace 2 sticks of 1 gig each that were PC2-5300 with a CAS latency of 5. So after the change, I still had the same amount, 2 gigs, of ram. Even though the memory is technically rated 20% faster (6400/5300, or 800/667), the increase in CAS latency negates most of the increase.
A) There is no "noticeable" increase in speed in my computer.
B) Running a memory benchmark (Sandra by SiSoftware) shows about a 7% increase in memory bandwidth.
I have other purposes for the memory (PC2-5300) that I took out of my machine , so it made sense to replace it with the maximum speed memory that the machine can handle (PC2-6400). But, unless you're also increasing the AMOUNT of ram, just increasing the speed from PC2-5300 to PC2-6400, for speed alone, would be a waste of money, because you can't see that 7% difference. (Unless you're like Geordi LaForge in Star Trek, and have to tweak your engines to get every last percentage point of efficiency.)
Memory speed is only a fraction of total system performance; hard drive speed and cpu speed play a big role too, so that 7% memory bandwidth probably translates to no more than a 2% overall difference.
Here are some rules of thumb for memory for Windows:
1. Windows XP needs a minimum of 1 gigabyte of ram to give adequate performance. 2 gigabytes will show improvement too, but going from 1 gig to 2 gigs isn't as dramatic an improvement than going from 512 meg to 1 gig.
2. Windows Vista needs a minimum of 2 gigabytes of ram to give adequate performance. You _will_ see a dramatic improvement when going from 1 gig to to 2 gigs of RAM with Vista.
Other rules:
1. Most all computer motherboards (laptop and desktop) that have 2 or more memory slots use "interleaving", which takes consecutive memory locations from alternate memory slots, giving a performance boost (due to cycle time on a given stick). Therefore, having 2 identical sticks of memory will be faster than an equal amount of memory all on one stick. IE, 2 sticks of 1 gig each is better than 1 stick of 2 gig. (And 2 sticks of 512 Meg each is better than 1 stick of 1 gig.)
(Note, many if not most _netbooks_ only have 1 memory slot.)
2. If you mix speeds of memory in the same system, say PC2-5300 and PC2-4200, the faster one will slow down to the speed of the slower one.
3. You cannot mix DDR (PC-xxxx), DDR2 (PC2-xxxx), and DDR3 (PC3-xxxx).
4. Memory within the same overall type, can be backward compatible usually only two steps:
PC2-6400 memory will usually work in motherboards designed for PC2-5300 and PC2-4200, but not PC2-3200. And check the motherboard or computer specification to make sure. [...] has a good memory configurator to tell you the maximum speed of memory that your system can utilize.
