Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Corsair 8GB Flash Voyager USB 2.0 Flash Drive CMFUSB2.0-8GBCustomer Review: Fast and High Quality USB stick Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned my Corsair 8GB stick for quite a few years now (about 3 years). This little stick is extremely durable and has some pretty high quality put into it. I own quite a few USB sticks but this one easily beats them all in both speed and durability.
** DESIGN **
The Corsair USB stick has a rubber housing which makes it not only water RESISTANT (not water-proof), and makes it very easy to grip/hold onto. The cap, even after about 3 years, still makes a nice tight fit over the USB head to help keep dust out or risk damage. Despite having a rubber housing I find the stick itself to be fairly lightweight but durable. I could easily see throwing this full force against a wall or stepping on it and no damage occurring (it is extremely well built)
When in use the stick has a LED that will illuminate and display activity (flickers when data is being transferred). This is helpful to know when the stick is active or not since pulling it out when there is activity can result in damage. There is even a small loop to attach this on a key-chain or string. However, **NOTE** the loop is pure rubber. There is no spine to it. I could easily see the loop ripping with a hard enough twist or yank so if you are going to use this feature be extra careful.
** TESTING **
When I first got this stick I remember testing it on my PC which has USB2.0 ports. While not listed here, the stick is rated for 33.0 MB/s READ, 16.0 MB/s WRITE. In testing "brand new" I got around 29.8 READ, 14.2 WRITE. Over the years I have continued to randomly test the speed on the stick and found very little change. Now at 3 years old the stick is still performing exceptional getting around 13.9 MB/s transfer rate.
This stick worked great Plug-n-Play on XP(32bit), Vista(64bit) and Windows 7(64bit) with a marginal speed difference on each system(could be related to the Operating System itself, or the USB controller) Speeds ranged from 13.5 MB/s to 14.2 MB/s WRITE and READ speeds of 28.5 to 30.1 MB/s
** OVERALL **
I highly recommend Corsair USB sticks. They are a quality Memory company which produces a variety of products including System RAM. Their sticks are incredibly durable and test exceptionally well even over a long lifespan. They come with a quality rubber housing and are built to last! While they can be a bit expensive as compared to other brands you are paying for the quality. A Must buy for any USB data backup!
PROS
- High quality design making the product EXTREMELY durable
- Very fast transfer rate even after years of constant use
- Rubber Housing makes for easier gripping
- LED indicator helpful to show activity
- 10 year warranty!!! (Corsair backs up their warranty 100%, which is why I always buy Corsair System RAM)
CONS
- Could be easy to lose the cap
- "Keychain loop" not re-enforced. Very strong possibility of the rubber tearing
** Note: There are faster USB sticks out there designed to essentially maximize transfer rate. I've test some that are as fast as 24 MB/s WRITE. However I often found these faster sticks would burn out much quicker aka "short lifespan"
** Note: If you receive your stick and are getting slow speeds (like 20MB/s READ 9 MB/s WRITE) you should FORMAT the stick and start fresh, preferably with FAT32 formatting. This has resolved many speed issues customers have had over at Corsair's main forum. [ It is recommended to format the stick out of the box before use ]
