Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco SR2016 16-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit SwitchCustomer Review: Do not buy. Lifetime warranty but a hassle to replace. 1 Star Summary: 5 Stars
I read somewhere that these were loud switches. I found it to be quiet and fast. Mine came with ears for a 19" rack mount. I installed a 1x12 shelf and attached two ears to make a "poor man's" rack mount to give it better ventilation. It's in the basement so it won't get very hot anyway.
The Gigabit speeds have been fabulous for moving files between computers on my network. Now if I only have this kind of speed in my pipe to the Internet.
I've had other Linksys products that have failed. I've returned them and been shipped still better newer products. This is why I stuck with Linksys this time.
Second update. Still working without a hiccup. I love it.
Looking at Netgear, I found they would not stand behind their products if used 24/7. Huh? Why would anyone shut one of these things down? Trust me--Linksys--most of their products are quite good and reasonable priced.
Third update:
Since my first review in FEB 2008, here it is now Mar 2 2009, my switch is still running strong.
So I ask you this, why is mine working great while so many others are failing. in the last year I've pushed enough data through my network to kill three routers. So it is not load.
My switch is in my basement in a cool location ona shelf next to a concrete wall My basement stays around 60 deg F in the winter and maybe 68 deg in the summer--it is always cool down there. So, if you keep your switch in a hot closet and let it cook itself to death--don't blame the product--blame yourself...
Fourth Update: It has only been a few days since my last update, and nearly every port has died on my switch in an instant. I do not recommend.
Here is what LinkSys told me. There have been a lot of returns on this item. They pulled all the inventory for over a month and later restocked--the implication being they made a fix to these things. Presently there are 57 in stock. So the turn around should be about two (2) weeks on a return if you are on the east coast, about a week if you live in California or Arizona.
These items do have a lifetime guarantee. I will admit it's failure put me under a lot of stress. however I did manage to find a very old four port 10BaseT Hub, and my router has five ports, so I now have 50% of my network up and my Wifi Access points can carry the load for a while. And if I can find the power brick to my small 100BaseT switch I'll nearly everything up and running. I can manager for two weeks.
The bottom line is this. I think LinkSys owe us customer something better than a swap. They should have had a recall on these things. We paid a lot for this device. We did get a lifetime warranty. After all the problems with this device, we should get an upgrade--not a replacement. I will have to keep my old hubs and swtiches handy, because I have a feeling I will need them again.
So, if you are shopping for a switch. Linksys does have a lifetime warranty, but you better have a fall back plan while you are waiting for the turn around.
