Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cables To Go 7 Port USB 2.0 HubCustomer Review: Ease The Cable Nightmare... Summary: 5 Stars
My previous USB Hub was a well known brand and all the peripheral devices would slow down and/or the unit would become very warm/hot when I tried to use all of it's ports at the same time. Even peripherals with their own power supplies would put a strain on it. This product will take just about all you can give it. I cannot comment on it's portable properties or the wear and tear that the hub would be subjected to if used as a portable device. However, even though it is surprisingly well made, how many times can you expect to drop it before it goes blink. Overall, the unit is about the size of a roll of quarters, the body is made of metal with sturdy plastic end-caps and the mount plate is also made from metal with two pre-drilled mounting holes! Two holes which allow it to be attached to a wall or to the side of a desk. Quite frankly I have never had a desire to take my hub with me as I use it only as a fixed part of my desk top PC setup. All of that plugging and unplugging does not appeal to me at all,but to each his own. I can see where it would be a perfect match for a laptop. I do want to address one particular issue that has been brought up by some reviewers and that is the length of the included cable. I do not want to be too simplistic in my answer, however I do believe that the hub maker assumes that you already have long connector cables and includes a cable that will easily reach from your peripheral device to the hub on your desk top or laptop unit. How long a cable does one need to connect two units on a desk top? In reality the short cable is perfect as the hub is small and a longer cable could just get in the way and aren't there enough long cables connected to your PC? In short, switch cables! Also,a longer cable might also drag the lap top and/or the unit off a desk top to the floor! I just do not get some people and the way they nit-pick a product. Some say the pilot light is too bright! The bright pilot light will let you know when things are going well. If it dims, you will know that the power drain is too high. If the light is too much, may I suggest a piece of frosty scotch tape? Or how about a small sheet of paper to cover the light. In an extreme situation, use some nail polish to dim dim dim the light.Or you can simply turn the unit upside down! Personally,I like the bright light as I can use it for a flashlight when I need to scrounge around in the cable monster's domain which is behind my PC desk.. Also,I have the unit placed to the rear of my monitor and the light shines onto the ceiling letting me know that everything is just peachy and well. Anyway,I have a monitor (A Hanns-G HG 281 28 inch monitor)whitch has the same type pilot light so I am not bothered by the lights. If you are, perhaps not working in the dark and turning on a light might work for you. Anyway,I have not reached the point of dim down on the CTG 7 yet. I use two permanent external back up HDs,One 300GB Maxtor One Touch II and One 500GB AcomData Hybrid drive (My Favorite Drive)that powers up and down continuously as it is needed. That process will tax any power supply but is not a problem for this CTG-7 Port Hub! I also have one Samsung Super Writemaster external DVD writer and a Lexmark X8350 scan/fax/printer as well as the usual suspects including a DigiCam etc. There is also a variety of thumb drives which I sometimes connect three at a time which act as extra hard drives. I keep songs on small thumb drives and listen to them while I am "PCing".(I think "computing" is a touch stuffy.) There is also a Seagate 160GB SATA HDD in an external case that I use as my "Jeep Drive" to move files from one location to another, all running at the same time and not even a blink, never mind a dim down. This is a very reliable unit and I am about to order a second for my friend's set up. You can spend a lot more money for a lot less return! It's just too bad other manufacturers do not produce products with this same degree of quality! Pick up a couple, you wont be sorry. Well, that's my two cents,I hope it helps you get the best deal. Thank you for your time.
