Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother TN460 High Yield Toner CartridgeCustomer Review: What a mess! Summary: 3 Stars
Here's my advice for removing the balance of the old toner and re-filling your Brother TN-360 High-Yield cartridge with the new toner included in the Laser Tek kit:
1. Do this outside, preferably on your lawn. Send the kids and pets away.
2. Wear old clothes that you won't mind getting stained with black toner powder.
3. Wear a nuisance mask so as not to inhale the fine toner powder.
4. Pick a day with some breeze, then be sure to stand UPWIND from the toner bottle.
5. Have a disposable bag or container handy to pour the old toner dregs into and seal it before carefully placing it in your garbage. If the bag or container is punctured, you'll really have a mess to clean up.
6. Be prepared to strip off the dirty clothes, wash separately from other laundry and take a shower.
Here's where it went all wrong: I carefully followed the inadequate instructions, including "Take a new toner bottle and shake it up to loosen the toner up." Then, "Screw the funnel provided onto the bottle of toner." Well, in between those two steps is a minor detail: One needs to remove the cap/seal on the soft plastic new toner bottle. I gently began to do so, only to have the fine, black toner powder blow out under pressure and all over me and everything near me, presumably from following the first step, e.g., "shake it up." Shaking it up evidently causes electrostatic pressure to build up in the bottle, kind of like shaking a carbonated beverage container up, then popping the tab or top.
So:
7. Oh so carefully, gently, bottle top pointed away from you, remove the cap/seal. Perhaps insert a sharp point, like the tip of an ice pick, so as to first relieve the pressure, before proceeding with the removal. Try not to squeeze the soft plastic bottle while doing so.
If, however, you also end up with toner dust to be cleaned, up, I'd advise a HEPA-filtered vacuum and micro-fiber cloths to clean the mess up. Fortunately, I had both nearby. Also, by pre-treating my good shirt with stain remover (Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Stain Remover), almost all the toner dust came out in the first wash.
All that said, the rest of the process went reasonably well for my first time, despite the inadequate instructions. The gear reset steps could use some more editing and explanations. The gear reset process may not be for the mechanically challenged. I studied the photos for some time before getting the little plastic gears reinserted in what I hoped were the correct positions.
The good news is that, from the first copy, the new toner performs very well. Dozens of copies later, the quality remains very high. I'm satisfied with the results and the savings over buying a new toner. But the geek who wrote the instructions should be sentenced to life at hard labor, cleaning up his or her customers' toner dust messes. Justice!
Hope this helps.
