Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother TN360 High Yield Black Toner Cartridge

Customer Review: Genuine product
Summary: 5 Stars

The main purpose of my review is just to confirm that I did order this exact item from Amazon and it was a genuine OEM high yield Brother TN-360 cartridge. At the time of this writing Amazon has one of the best prices on this OEM cartridge and the free shipping is nice too.

As others have said, cover up the clear plastic window with some black tape when your toner out light comes on prematurely, which it will. On my first cartridge I got the toner out light after a few months, kept printing anyway for a little while then the printer refused to print at all. I discovered the trick with the tape and put it on, then printed out another two reams of paper (over 1000 sheets) for another whole YEAR. And that was with the "starter" cartridge that came with the printer! I printed out twice as many sheets after the toner out light came on than before it came on.

Pretty cheap trick by Brother, but at least there is a workaround....

I also found that life can be extended a bit more when the plot quality starts to get a little spotty/fuzzy near the end of the cartridge's life by taking the cartridge and the drum outside, separating them and shooting the crud off both with some compressed air. When I do this outside with the air it doesn't make a mess.

Customer Review: Don't believe your printer!
Summary: 4 Stars

I love my brother laser printer, and the toner lasts a very long time. In fact, the toner lasts far longer than the printer would have you believe. A few months ago, I ordered a new toner cartridge because the "toner" light on the printer came on and, once that happens, you cannot print anything. When this happens, cover the two holes on the sides of the toner cartridge with either masking tape or duct tape (scotch tape won't work). This keeps the printer from "reading" the toner level and telling you to change the cartridge. I did this and I have literally printed HUNDREDS of pages on a cartridge that was allegedly empty. It's almost criminal; I'm a law student, so I print long documents on a regular basis. The fact that the printer would force you to change the cartridge when there is plenty of toner left is unconscionable. It's a clear ploy to make money, forcing you to buy things you don't really need, and it's wasteful (possibly bad for the environment as well). So it's a great printer in general, but DO NOT believe the printer when it tells you there is no toner. Trick the printer with tape. The toners are even better than brother would have you believe. An "empty" cartridge will keep printing things for months. Literally.

Customer Review: Bad experience
Summary: 1 Stars

I ordered a toner for my Brother printer, but it wasn't a Brother Toner I got, it was a toner that was supposed to be the same as a Brother. My toner ran out when I was printing some important documents and I opened the toner that I had ordered in February. When I opened the inside black envelope to remove the cartridge, black powder went everywhere. I took it out of the package and tried to clean it up as best I could and inserted it in my printer. It wouldn't work. I took it out time and time again and tried to refit it after multiple times cleaning my printer on the inside from all the black powder. I finally gave up, removed the cartridge and drove to a local Office Max and purchased a Brother TN360 High Yield Black Toner Cartridge. I had to clean the drum (which you're not really supposed to do), so at first my printer printed unevenly, but finally it began to print normally again. I contacted the supplier and they refunded my money, thankfully. For the small amount of savings it would have been if it had worked, it certainly wasn't worth all the trouble it caused.

Customer Review: Does the job I need for my heavy home printing use
Summary: 5 Stars

At a reasonable price, this high-yield toner cartridge slips in nicely and makes enough copies to keep this paper-based home office content. As a writer, I need to do a lot of printing - I print out research, drafts, manuscripts, press releases, emails and documents all day long. I need a dependable cartridge and buy this one every time.

A good hint, if you do a tremendous amount of print jobs at home, is to re-set your default printer instructions for the lowest-quality and "toner-saving" settings. The pages come out lovely for my own use (not too light at all), and the cartridge lasts longer.

It's worth it for the price to get the high-yield cartridge, BTW. You are really paying much more for the plastic housing than any actual ink.

Plus, as each one of these large toner containers has a large carbon footprint as it's produced, and creates toxic waste in landfills when empty, getting as much use out of one single, efficient product is better for the environment than any of the lower-yield versions.

Customer Review: OEM version and How to Extend Toner Life
Summary: 5 Stars

Before I ordered this item, I called to make sure that it was an OEM vs. generic version. I placed the order on 1/26/09 and the item was delivered on 1/31/09. Although I haven't opened the package, the box indicates that it's an OEM from Brother. So, perhaps Amazon has corrected the problem.

Also, someone posted this tip for another Brother printer cartridge, but it works on the TN360 as well.

The Toner Life LED flips on, requiring you to replace the cartridge, even when there's still toner left in the cartridge. The machine detects end of life by shining a light through from one side to the other.

To circumvent the detection mechanism, remove the cartridge and put a piece of masking tape over the clear opening/circle on the right side of the toner cartridge, and then pop the cartridge back in. Eventually, you'll start seeing streaks, and then you'll know that the cartridge is truly empty.
