Customer Review: It's just a toner cartridge

Nothing much to say, the toner cartridge does what it is supposed to do, print black ink.
I think the "high yield" version is a better deal than the non-"high yield" version. The Amazon price is much better than what I could find in the local "office" brick & mortar superstores.
One complaint: After you have printed the budgeted number of pages for the cartridge, the printer will "lock up" and not let you print any more with the cartridge. It does this even though there's probably some ink left. It's incredibly frustrating. Brother is not the only company that does this.

The cartridge made it 6 months in a household with a law student and a grad student before the Low Toner warning came on. In the same amount of time we went through three reams of paper--1,500 pages--and I promise we were close to the 5% paper coverage Brother expects. The masking-tape-over-the-window method described elsewhere in the reviews gave us another 2 months of far lower usage. In sum: if you bought a laser printer on the expectation that it would print more pages for less money than an inkjet printer, run the numbers on the assumption that these $60 cartridges last for 2,000 pages.Customer Review: Refurbished worked great

I freaked when I received one of the refurbished cartridge from one of the vendors in the used and new vendor section. It was quite different looking from the original, but it fit just fine, the print quality is great, and it was half the price of the new one. The cartridge my Brother HL 50250DN printer came with lasted over a year (with my wife being a writer!) and this high capacity cartridge is supposed to have twice the capacity. 1/2 cent per page!
BTW the Brother HL 50250DN is a great duplex printer and i can even feed card stock through it with no problems.

The TN580 cost a few dollars more than the smaller capacity TN550 cartridge yet it yields twice the output. By far the best value of the two. [...] offered the TN580 at the best price on the Internet and I received the item within a few days of the order. I therefore rate Amazon.com and their offering of the TN580 the Best VAlue, Price and Service on the Internet today.
I also rate the Brother 5250DN laser printer the best value duplex (2 sided) printer on the market. It has NEVER jammed or miss printed a single page and I've printed over 20,000 pages on it!

Its been a month since I bought this cartridge and its been working well. Hopefully it will print as many pages as it is supposed. During the first few times of use, a black smudge used to appear every 2-3 lines apart on the margin of the paper. After some checking found that there was a lump of ink that that was deposited on the roller in the cartridge and that this lump was not getting wiped out during printing. Had to scrape this out from the roller with a piece of paper. After that there has been no problems. I guess this was a minor manufacturing defect.
