Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother TN-115BK High Yield Black Toner Cartridge for Brother HL4040CN,HL4070CDW SeriesCustomer Review: Horrible printer and toner cartridge Summary: 1 Stars
I owned a 9840CDW for almost two years. The print quality is really bad. After a few hundred pages, I see streaks run down the pages. I also see stains. This happens to the original black and blue toners. After I replaced them, the problem went away for only a few hundred pages. Then it came back for black toner. I checked the manual and found that we have to clean two areas. One is the drum unit. It produces equally spaced stains on the page. The other is the spill of the toner. I have to constantly clean it.
Brother has a unique design that toner cartridges and drum units are separate. So you don't have to replace them all together like other brands. . All the Brother color printers share this design. They all use the same toner cartridges and drum units. It apparently reduces the production cost greatly. But it seems to me that with this design toner cartridges and drum units are very flimsy. I have done the cleaning of toner carriages and drum unit so many times that I can do that without taking out the drum unit. I never have to do this to other laser printers. And I never know so much detail about laser printers before I own a Brother printer.
If unfortunately you own one and would like to keep it, the other thing you have to watch out is the cost of toner. It will stop working after a preset number of pages even you still have a lot of toner in it. You can follow the instruction below to reset the toner cartridge. It will save you a lot of money.
Amazon won't let me post the url. Please search the web for the instruction. You have to open the cap and turn back the wheel in the cartridge. Good luck.
Customer Review: High Capacity - Low Hassle Summary: 4 Stars
I used to purchase toner cartridges for my Brother 4070CDW color laser at Office Depot. For just a few dollars more, I can purchase this High Capacity cartridge.
I have had my Brother 4070CDW for almost 3 years, and I really love it. I have almost 10,000 pages through it with no major problems. I use only Brother original cartridges. In the past, I had 2 cartridges fail to give me the amount of pages it should have. I called Brother customer service, they had me push a series of buttons on the panel which gave a much more, in depth report as to the use of the printer and the individual cartridges. Did you know that there is a maintenance function which will tell you how many pages you got from your current cartridges AND the last used cartridge, plus the average page cover percentage of each color. How many jams have you had? This report will tell you. Now, whenever I change a cartridge of any color, I always run this report to make sure I got the amount of pages out of the cartridge that was advertised. (Do you know about the trick of covering up the plastic eye of the cartridge with a piece of black electrical tape? You can get about 200 - 500 more pages out of the cartridge even though ti says your cartridge is empty.) Google something like "Cover Brother Cartridge with tape" You will get several hits and You Tubes on how to stretch a few more pages out of your cartridge.
Anyway, I have loved this printer, and I print a lot of desktop layout, color photo projects with it. The original Brother cartridges work well and the quality is consistent.
Customer Review: Exactly what it claims. Summary: 4 Stars
These toners are easy to install. One thing though, after the first warning of these toners being low I take them out and check the little round window to see if there is still toner. If there is, I wind back the gear with a peg on it back to its original position. I recently did this with all three colors as it was reported they were going low. After winding back the gears, the printer performed perfectly for another month with a moderate amount of color printing. Finally, the low toner warnings went off again and since there appeared no more toner, I installed new ones. I have a closet full of these consumables and look forward to many great years printing with these printers. (We have 6 of them)
*EDIT 12/20/10*
We've 3 more of the 9840cdw printers now. Here is something important you should know along with the above information:
Hidden Menus for Brother 9840cdw-
**Toner Reset Menu - Open front door of printer. Press the 'clear' button once or twice. There are two capacities for each color. It will start counting down from whichever you choose.
**Everything Else Reset Menu - Press '3' and '9' at the same time. Hidden reset menu will appear. Select item, select reset.
Customer Review: Avoid the high price, low performance of a genuine Brother Toner Cartridge. Summary: 2 Stars
I bought four replacement toner cartridges for my Brother MFC 9840CDW multi-function printer. I tried to get all genuine Brother toner cartridges per the product documentation. I replaced the Magenta, Yellow, and Black with Brother brand. I had to get a third party OEM for Cyan. The first cartridge to fail was the Black toner cartridge by Brother. I got a toner end of life message, so I opened up the printer. The black toner spilled all over. There is apparently a leak in Borther's genuine toner cartridge. After cleaning up the mess, I found that there's still a lot of toner left in the cartridge, but the leak is unbearable. I bagged the cartridge and looked for warranty on toners, but it looks like Brother does not stand behind their toners. They just like to sell you theirs for a premium. I placed an order for a new OEM black cartridge for half the price of a Brother counter part today. I have to use the printer, so I put the Cyan cartridge in the black hole and I'm currently printing everything in blue. I feel like I've been SMURF'd.
Customer Review: Don't buy generic, this is worth the extra money Summary: 5 Stars
We go through a lot of toner cartridges and we've found that buying the Brother brand cartridges not only give you more prints but more prints than the number of pages it states it should give you. The generic brands have not lasted as long and have given us far less than the stated number of pages. We did have a problem with a cartridge once that cause the printer to malfunction - we just got a bad cartridge I suppose. But if something goes wrong, the Brother customer service is really helpful when it is a Brother cartridge that caused the problem and will send you out a new cartridge right away. It is a bit of a hassle as you would expect that the first one would work for such a high priced item but I guess this can happen with any product you buy. I do recommend this cartridge over the generic brands if you print high volume since it is worth it for the price per page since you will get more pages per cartridge than stated.
