Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother MFC-7840W Laser Multifunction CenterCustomer Review: Early review: Easy wireless set-up. Print feature is great. Summary: 5 Stars
Well, I didn't like the fact that 10% of the reviews were horrible. But then I noticed that these people were mostly having set-up and "it doesn't work" problems. So then I thought: You know, I'll bet 10% of everybody who buys one of these things would either not follow the set-up directions properly or not read them in the first place. So I bought one of these Brother MFC-7840W multifunctions right here on Amazon. It arrived in about 5 days.
Less than an hour after it arrived it was printing for our two MacBooks wirelessly. I'm kind of anal about reading instructions thoroughly before I begin a set up such as this. My wife, on the other hand, has never met a written instruction that she's bothered to read. She had it printing wirelessly for both of our Macs before I finished reading the set-up instruction booklet. The machine almost set itself up--you just follow the on-screen instructions.
Then I wirelessly sent it a VERY complicated graphic with many shades of grey and tiny 1/8-inch dotted fill shapes and text in a very fine print size. It thought about 20 seconds after I clicked "Print," and then gave me a perfect laser print out about every three seconds. Beautiful print quality!
It's much too early to evaluate the MFC-7840W from the standpoint of toner use and reliability, so I will edit this review after a few months. Also, we have not tried the copy, scan, or fax features yet. But what a beautiful printer with amazingly easy wireless set up.
Customer Review: Great Wireless Multi-Function! Summary: 5 Stars
I spent about a week researching for just the right multi-function printer for my needs. I own a small business with about 30 employees so I needed more than an inkjet but didn't require a 'corporate' $1000+ version either. I needed fax, scan, copy, and print capability with laser printing and built-in wireless capability. Suprisingly, there are not that many printers on the market that can give you all of these in one package. Originally I was going to purchase the Brother's MFC-8870 for around $500 which all the reviews on the internet recommend, but I found this while browsing around and realized that it had just come out a few weeks ago. Although there were no reviews out yet for this new printer, it was considerably less expensive than the 8870 and the only thing I seemed to be losing was auto-duplexing so I made the purchase. It took about 15 minutes total for me to set up an ad-hoc wireless printer setup and everything works great. The scans are nice, the printing is very crisp and clear even in very small fonts. The only thing I haven't tried yet is the fax which I won't be using much. I really can't say anything bad about this product. Sure it would be nice to have a legal-size flatbed, auto-duplex, and 64mb memory (instead of the default 32mb) but for the money this can't be beat. Overall, this seems to be a really great product at a great price. I highly recommend this if you need a 4-in-1 with wireless capability. Definitely the best on the market for this niche.
Customer Review: No wires? No Problem! - A good home office choice Summary: 5 Stars
THE GOOD: Wireless setup is a breeze - even in a secure network. Reasonably fast printing and copying.
THE BAD: It takes up some desktop real estate, leaving less space for my piles of papers. Maybe that's not so bad :o)
SUMMARY: If you're looking for a no-nonsense, no-color B&W printer, the Brother MFC7840W is an excellent choice. Initial setup and operation is easy. A decent menu system offers configuration flexibility. Would I buy this again? YES.
DETAIL: Wanting to replace my seldom-used color bubble jet printer, as well as the dog of a scanner from HP that I got (quite) a few years back bundled with a Dell purchase, and wanting to add faxing capability to my home office, I decided to get an all-in-one printer. The color tanks in my bubble jet kept saying "empty" long before running out of ink due to the jet nozzles drying out due to insufficient use. Since 99% of my printing is B&W, I figured a laser multi-function unit would be a good solution. Printing is reasonably fast after short initial warm up, scanning to JPEG is pleasantly quick, especially compared with my old HP (which would go through a warm up cycle with each scanned page), and wireless set-up (in my 802.11g network) was painless - only need to enter the security key once and I was up and running. The unit defaults (and returns) to fax mode, but you can configure it to stay in copy or scan mode via it's simple menu system.
Customer Review: Fantastic Printer and Scanner Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using this printer heavily over the last 6 months. It is connected to an access point and shared by 6 people. This is a great printer for the money. So much so I am ordering one for my home.
Set up - after unboxing and getting the printer ready it took 5 minutes to set up to connect to the access point. It stays connected unlike HP printers
Print Quality - Very crisp clear printing even on cheap paper. We use it a lot for complex bar codes and it is perfect.
Print Speed - Great for this price range
Scan Quality - provides a lot of settings. Even at 150x150 to PDF the quality is still good
Scan Speed - just scanned 39 pages black and white 300x300 to PDF as fast as the paper can move through the feeder - very high resolution color can take a while but no more than any other print/scanner in this price range
Feeder - the 39 pages scanned went through with no problems - no jams or issues in 6 months
OCR - actually works really well - save me when we could only find the printed version of a document - 100% correct
Toner - buy a high capacity cartridge which gives a lot of copies, the cartridge that comes with the printer does not last that long. Also you can get lower cost second market toner cartridges for this printer.
Copier - find for a multi function device, speed is fair and quality is good
Again after 6 month heavy usage I am very happy.
Customer Review: Great all-rounder Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this multifunction printer for a little over a month to replace my old piece of junk HP OfficeJet 4130xi ink jet printer. I hate ink jets, so my requirement for a replacement was that it had to be laser and ideally wireless or at least networkable. I was strongly considering an HP LaserJet multifunction, since I've had great luck with HP lasers, but the reviews were less than stellar. Not to mention, no wireless capability on the HP's. After reading the reviews for this Brother, I was convinced this would be a good option.
I've been extremely happy with it overall. I use it wirelessly with both a PC and a Mac and it works just fine with both, be it printing or scanning. Setting it up was a breeze as well on my secure wireless network - after entering the passcode it found the network and connected without issue.
The only 2 nitpicks I have, and they're pretty minor, is that printing html-based docs with a lot of pics and so on can be slow, but this may very well be due to the network and not the printer. I'm too lazy to hook up a USB cable to try and compare ;) The 2nd issue, very minor, is that the print quality isn't quite as crisp as an HP laser. I compared 2 identical printouts from the Brother and another from a midrange HP Laser and the HP was definitely crisper, but honestly for home use and so on, the Brother fits the bill just fine. Would definitely recommend it!
