Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother MFC-7840W Laser Multifunction CenterCustomer Review: No problems at all Summary: 5 Stars
I read a lot of reviews before eventually settling on this all-in-one printer. I wanted a laser because I don't print much and didn't want the ink drying out (that and I hate the way inkjets print). I also wanted a scanner to digitize my pictures and documents so I can email them. And I wanted a copier. (No use for a fax so I can't comment on that function.) And I particularly wanted wireless to reduce clutter and enable me to locate the printer anywhere. This model fit all those needs.
I printed a Word document, copied it, and scanned a Christmas card--all looked good to me.
I read some people had problems with the wireless connectivity. Not me. I input my WEP key and the printer hooked up to my router with no further help (follow the quick start guide). Then I loaded the software on my PC and it printed/scanned without any configuration on my part. Piece of cake. I did have to skip the paperport function on the install because it's not set up for Windows 7 yet, but Brother's releasing updated software in early December so that should sort itself out then.
I also read the printer caused lights to flicker and PCs to switch to UPS when it kicked on. I plugged it into it's own outlet and have had no problems.
I'm not a small business so my needs are basic and undemanding. Some reviewers thought this unit was a bit flimsy. Maybe, but I think with reasonable care the personal user isn't going to break it. It's hard to beat the functionality for this price (I bought it from Amazon for $284 with free shipping.)
Customer Review: Excellent printer. Very easy to connect to my wireless network Summary: 5 Stars
I have used the MFC series of products from Brother for the past several years and have been very pleased with the product line. I have found them to be very functional, good quality printers/scanners/copiers. The automatic feeder function works well, and the menu controls on the machine are straightforward. I have both Windows and Macintosh computers and found the drivers support excellent for both platforms.
I found the need for a wireless MFC. I read the reviews posted here and elsewhere and I was concerned that I would have difficulty connecting the MFC to my wireless network. I have a straightforward network but do use the WPA2 security settings. I was concerned after reading the reviews on this product that I would have to change my security settings to connect this printer. I am happy to say that the setup with my wireless network was easy -- worked on the first try -- and no need to change any of my existing security settings. I use the Apple Airport Extreme as my wireless access point so Mac users take heart -- this unit works great with the Mac! This MFC unit also has "one push" settings for the Linksys Secure Easy Setup as well as the AOSS and WiFi Protected setups.
I have not posted reviews before but have found the real-world information found here and elsewhere to be particularly useful. I felt compelled to share my experience given the rather sparse Mac-specific information, and given my trepidation prior to purchasing the unit that I would have difficulty connecting it to my wireless network.
Good luck shopping!
Customer Review: BROTHER IS THE BEST! Summary: 4 Stars
AFTER 13 YEARS OF USING MY BROTHER MFC-8300 IT WAS FINALLY TIME TO REPLACE. THE 8300 IS STILL WORKING LIKE A CHAMP BUT SINCE IT WAS NEEDING A NEW TONER CARTRIDGE ANYWAY I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO UPGRADE. ALSO, MY LAPTOP HAS VISTA AND THE 8300 DOESN'T SUPPORT VISTA. I WANTED AN AUTOMATIC FEED AS WELL AS A FLATBED WITH THE MENU SCREEN IN FRONT. MY 8300 DIDN'T HAVE A SCANNER SO I WANTED THAT ALSO. I TOO, WANTED THE WIRELESS CAPABILITY FOR MY LAPTOP. CHECK, CHECK, CHECK. I ALSO WISH IT HAD DUPLEX PRINTING BUT THE PRICE JUMPED CONSIDERABLY FOR THAT ONE SINGLE FEATURE. THIS HAS AN ENERGY STAR RATING AND IS VERY QUIET. IT'S NICE LOOKING, WAS READY TO ROLL IN A MATTER OF MINUTES AND THE 32 MB MEMORY IS A PLUS. I THINK I CAN STILL SELL MY 8300 FOR A FEW BUCKS BECAUSE IT STILL WORKS GREAT AND THE ONLY THING I'VE EVER HAD TO SPEND ON IT WAS TONER (I USE IT A LOT!) WHICH I REPLACED AROUND EVERY 18 MONTHS WITH A HIGH YIELD AND 2 DRUMS OVER THE WHOLE 13 YEARS. THE 7840W IS NICE LOOKING, SMALLER AND LIGHTER. THERE IS NOT ANOTHER MAKE OF PRINTER OUT THERE THAT LASTS SO TROUBLE FREE AS THE BROTHER. MY FRIENDS HAVE GONE THROUGH AN AVERAGE OF ONE PRINTER EVERY 2-3 YEARS, DEPENDING ON USAGE AND HERE I WAS STILL USING THE SAME ONE ALL THESE YEARS. I HAVE A SMALL EPSON (WHICH I GOT FREE WITH MY COMPUTER) THAT I HAVE BEEN USING FOR SCANNING UNTIL NOW AND WILL CONTINUE TO USE FOR COLOR PRINTING ONLY. THE ECONOMY OF THE LASER AND THE QUALITY OF PRINTING AND COPYING CAN'T BE BEAT. WHEN THE COLOR LASER PRINTERS COME DOWN IN PRICE, INKJET WITH VIRTUALLY BE EXTINCT.
Customer Review: Easy wireless network setup -- great for Macs! Summary: 5 Stars
I've got a complicated wireless set-up at home and was looking for a multifunction printer to fit seamlessly into our network. This Brother printer turned out to be a life-saver. I was skeptical at first, having tried unsuccessfully to set up several older HP printers on our wireless network using Apple Airport Extreme. Often, I could get the printer to work fine, but not the scanner or fax -- or vice versa; or I had to download some drivers that did or did not work. There were lots of kinks and we finally gave up on the wireless printing until we read reviews about this printer.
In a short amount of time, we were able hook up our PC desktop and two Macs (Pro and Powerbook) laptops to the printer using Airport Airport Extreme. We can now print wirelessly without problems, make copies, and scan from our the printer directly onto our laptop folder. So much better than anything we've experienced before using the Airport Extreme.
Setting up the printer was fairly straightforward though we ran into a glitch. But after a little Internet searching, I figured out that if I changed the security setting from WPA2 to WEP, the printer was able to recognize my wireless network. Once I did that, it worked like a charm.
For the price, this printer delivers excellent quality and great features; we print checks, invoices and deposit slips for a small business we run from home. The quality is good; I can't speak to how many copies it can run because we've only had it for a month now and the ink is still going strong.
Customer Review: Brother MFC-7840W Laser All-In-One Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased the Brother MFC-7840W for $209.99 and well worth the cost. I did not need a color laser printer, so I researched many of the black-and-white multifunction laser printers for my business. I wanted a wireless printer because I did not have the room next to the server to put a printer. Of all the printers I researched, I was stuck between the Samsung SCX-4623FW Wireless and this Brother printer. The Brother MFC-7840W was the only one that advertised 48 bit color scanning. The reviews on the Samsung SCX-4623W were not so great. This printer (Brother) was easy to set up, the connection to the wireless network was simple and quick, the software was easy to install, and I was scanning in minutes. Everything worked without a hitch. I have had the printer for about 1 month now and no issues that I can complain about except one. For some reason, Brother advertises 48 bit color scanning, but when I try to scan through the Brother Control Center or the included Paperport software, it only gives me the choice of 24 bit scanning. I have written Brother tech support about this issue, but they returned my email asking me to call them directly. They are only open M-F 8-5, so I have not had the chance to do that as of this writing. When I do and figure out the true 48 bit scanning, I will re-post my review. But despite this one issue, I can only say good things about this printer thus far. Oh, one other thing - the toner cartridges for the Brother are MUCH less than the Samsung. Another good point!
