Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brite-View BV-5005HD "CinemaTube" 3-in-1 1080p Full HD Multimedia Player/Streamer/Torrent Downloader, BlackCustomer Review: Great HD Media player -- Brigte-View comparison with Western Digital WD TV Live Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this based on good reviews and good experience w/ WD TV Live.
Was NOT disappointed.
Background: Any brand name NAS box or Window 7 supports uPNP (no need for a full DLNA support) media server. This is the preferred server (source of audio, vido files) for this media player. Have both Buffalo Linkstation NAS (Quad) as well as Netgear ReadyNas (NV+), and both work well (as well as the Windows 7 PCs) with this product (and also Western Digital WD TV Live).
On Wireless Connectivity: This product seem to only support Wireless USB
product such as Airlink101 802.11N 300 Mbps (AirLink101 AWLL6075 Wireless N Mini USB Adapter) that is based on Realtek chip. Shame for now, since Broadcom and Atheros based USB sticks perform better and are more available. But the positive is that Realktek chip based products seem cheaper for now (circa 02/2010). My experience with the Airlink101 USB 802.11N wireless stick with this product has been good. Works over 200 ft through two doors and a corridor, and hardly ever drop connection with sparse internet use by my children. If they are also streaming onto their PCs, the wireless connection does get affected (annoying, not unusable). NOTE: DO NOT go by just a brand when shopping for WLAN USB adapter -- Go by BRAND and MODEL. Basically underlying WLAN chip must be the same kind as the one sold by this company (Brite-View) for it to work.
Positives (also relative to WD TV Live)
1. All Video ports are standard, i.e. RCA jacks for composite and component, instead of proprietary 3.5 mm jack to RCA cable on WD. But also means that you need to supply your own cable.
2. Wireless (once compatible WiFi USB stick is installed) support all modern encryption modes, WEP, WPA, WPA2 w/ AES, etc, and settings meet required WiFi compatibility. PREFERRED WiFi mode is WPA2 w/ AES (no TKIP). This is VERY important, because you need to make your media available on your Wireless network and you do not want your geek neighbor to also access your media server. All wireless encryption modes has been broken, with exception of WPA2-AES. Also make sure you use long pass-phrase, greater than 12~15 characters if you value your privacy. Would you want to share your private pictures and home movies with your geeky neighbor?
NOTE: If you have WD TV Live, you need to get Wifi USB stick from Buffalo or others, based on Broadcom or Atheros chip. WD does not support Airlink101 (Realtek chip).
3. Par with WD TV live on decoding everything. Software upgrades from respective companies seem to make this a non-issue for most video formats with current firmware and likely in the future.
4. Perhaps the key difference for now (circa 02/2010) -- lip-sync (how video and audio are sync'ed so that when a person in a movie talks with lip moving, the sound is synchronized (how it should work). I found WD TV has lip-sync issues, especially after fast-forward or rewind (but not necessarily. sometimes it just happens in normal play on some mpeg4 contents). Playing the same content on this product does NOT have the problem. A big win for this product's software revision.
5. Another difference for geeks (circa 02/2010) is that WD TV supports uPnP discovery and bonjour (apple) and this product does not. For non-geeks, that means itunes and windows 7 PC recongnize WD TV's hard drive (via USB) content and provide access to songs and movies to itunes and windows 7 PC, so that you could play the WD TV disk content on Windows 7 PC (or Windows XP w/ itunes) or Macs. This one (or more accurately, this product with current version) does not support such function today.
6. Do not consider P2P download capability as positive, although some may view it as positive. Downloading licensed content could be monitored and worse, you could get caught and prosecuted. Seem like a bad idea to include this for use by potentially ignorant (to copyright laws) users. For those who are savvy, welcome addition (lower power than keeping your PC on for P2P download).
Negatives (also relative to WD TV Live)
1. Size - Bigger (due to the standard video interface jacks). Not an issue for living room. But I bought WD TV Live to install in the family SUV, next to the DVD player, instead. WD TV was much easier to install in the SUV. Uses +12V DC roughly regulated, which is fine for automotive DC power (just use a surge/noise suppressors on DC power line).
2. Audio quality over RCA jack -- much more background noise than WD TV Live. Ove HDMI, it was also noisier, but not as noticeable than RCA jack audio.
3. Both WD TV Live and this unit will freeze time to time when Wireless connection bandwidth is affected by other users (or neighbor's Wireless AP interference). So both units does not handle network connection failures/issues very well. Both support "continue from last scene", which is welcome feature to deal with this (although I would prefer to see a more robust error handling in the future firmware updates). Both work fine over wired (Ethernet) connection without any freezes.
Recommendation (common with WD TV Live)
1. Buy either one. Both are highly recommended IF you have large # of digital content on your NAS server, or PC/Laptop. Neither streams netflix, etc, premium content. Both stream Youtube.
2. With NAS and wireless (or Ethernet) connection, local USB storage truly became optional. (Refer to the above on what wireless USB to purchase).
3. Recommend WD TV to supplement DVD players in cars due to the WD TV's small size and more rugged enclosure. BTW, most DVD players in cars has Aux input -- fairly easy install.
