Customer Review: Took Getting Used to, but Great!
Summary: 4 Stars

It reads a little low, so I keep that in mind when using it. It is consistent, so I know that my son usually reads 96 degrees so when he is up around 99 or so on this one, I just do a rectal. I would much rather have the ear indicator than do the rectal thermometer frequently! It's saved lots of hassle. It does require the covers, but if I don't mind using the same ones over for the same kid. . .no biggie if you can't get to the store. Someone complained about a battery problem. My son is two and we've never had to replace the batteries. Maybe theirs was defective. I would recommend this product, but with any thermometer, you just have to get used to how it reads and adjust your actions accordingly. My son also thinks its great fun to listen for the beep :)

Customer Review: Just ordered......
Summary: 4 Stars

I just ordered this. I had bought one about 10 years ago when they first came out. (And what a surprise at the price difference! LOL! They were $100 back then!) Anyhow, I LOVE it. It's still working fine, but it's a bit big and bulky and at this price I may as well get a new one!

The thing I want to address is that a lot of people are talking about wrong readings. Well, it has a LOT to do with the ear canal more than the thermometer. My husband and daughter have very narrow canals and the thermometer does not work on them no matter HOW it, or the ear, are positioned. On myself and my two sons, it works just fine. The thermometer has to have a clear opening to fit in right, and to feel the heat of the fever accurately.

Customer Review: never the same temp twice
Summary: 1 Stars

first of all, it's still way too large to fit into my 11 month old's ear canal at all. when i try it on me or my husband i will get 3 different temperatures if i use it three times. in my right ear i can get 98 degrees one time, then 99.8, then 96.4. then if i switch to my left ear i get 101.5! it's rediculously inaccurate. i should have heeded warnings about this thermometer, but for some reason thought it would work for us. the idea of rectal seemed so horrible before my son was born, so we bought it anyway. but it's really really not that big a deal, and it's far more accurate, and if my son's health is on the line, then i want the most accurate measurement possible.
don't bother with this waste of money like i did!

Customer Review: Braun thermoscan ear thermometer
Summary: 1 Stars

These thermometers can register a fever when one isn't really present. Mine has registered a fever at home, but (without my having given any medicine to my child) the nurse at the pediatrician's office gets a "normal" reading on the oral thermometer - even less than an hour after I've taken my child's temperature at home! In fact, the nurses at my pediatrician's office said they stopped using the ear thermometers, because they are so unreliable and sometimes register fevers when none are really present. My ear thermometer is going to go into the trash now. We've decided to abandon using it and use an oral thermometer instead (although I've seen mixed reviews about those, too - what's a mother to do???).

Customer Review: Works great if you read the directions
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using the Braun Ear Thermometer for about 2 years. It works great if you read the directions on how to pull the ear to get a straight shot down the ear canal. It is far, far better than trying to hold a screaming child still for the 3 minutes that a regular thermometer takes.

You are not supposed to use it on an ear that the child has been laying on, but other than that my pediatrition says that it doesn't read high. I usually take 2 or 3 readings and trust the highest one. You just have to pay attention to see when it has wax on the cover so you can change the cover. I can usually tell because it starts reading really low. I've found the covers at the local pharmacy.
