Customer Review: Buy a RECTAL thermometer BEFORE your baby gets sick.
Summary: 3 Stars

I like this thermometer because it is fast and convenient, but please buy a RECTAL thermometer for piece of mind. As many other reviews have stated, the ear thermometer gives scattered readings. Yes, I followed the directions, but the slightest change in angle causes a change in reading. I do use the "highest of three readings" rule. I just wish I would have had a rectal on hand when my little guy was truly sick. As a first time mother, I felt frustrated and nervous about the scattered readings. When buying a rectal, purchase the fastest reading one you can find. I like the second one I bought. It's a Safety 1st 10 second thermometer. It has a line showing the proper insertion depth, which was another plus. I use the rectal to get an accurate reading and then just use the ear for checking up periodically in between diaper changes.
Bottom line: Don't get caught without a rectal thermometer when your tiny baby gets sick. If you can afford a rectal AND this ear thermometer, the ear one can come in handy.
I guess I should mention my sister really liked this one alot.

Customer Review: Hate it!

My Braun thermoscan has given me nothing but trouble.
Yes this ear thermometer is easy to use. You just have to stick it into the canal correctly. Not hard. What I don't like is you can stick it in the same ear, the same way, 6 different times and get very different readings.
Everytime I have gone to use my thermometer, the battery would be dead. You have to use the special medical circular batteries, so of course I would never have any handy. Then I got smart and started stocking up on the batteries. They are expensive. And everytime I would use it I'd have to put in a fresh new battery.
This also needs the disposable ear covers in order for it to work. Yes there is a trick to getting around it but then your thermometer isn't sanitary. Finding the covers was sometimes easy and sometimes impossible.
I have just never been happy with it. Yes it's easier than the oral... But I found one even better. Try the Temporal Artery Thermometer. You can use that one on a sleeping child!

Customer Review: Does anyone really think this works?
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this ear thermometer thinking all parents need one, that it was essential to have a fast and easy device for getting an accurate temperature reading on a baby. well, it simply doesn't work. it has one job and one job only: to take a temperature. if one reading says 96, and then you immediately press the button again without moving the thermometer from the ear and it reads 99, there's a problem. a baby can't tell you when it's in her ear far enough, and to be honest, i try it on myself and can't seem to get a consistent reading. it has been sitting in a shelf on her changing table, but i may as well just throw it away. my daughter doesn't mind me taking her temperature rectally, i think it surprises her a little and she actually sits very still. also, under the arm works really well too. i usually add a degree to that. long story short, just a plain old digital thermometer is the way i decided to go after shelling out money for this supposedly superior device.

Customer Review: A Good Purchase - a review of the Braun Ear thermometer
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the one I buy for friends and the one they use at my pediatricians office. It is like the one I bought 5 years ago with my first baby, the one that is still humming along.

I have been really happy with our thermometer with the exception that it was-and-is still too big to use with my second child, a boy who persists in having 'tiny' ear canals even though he is three now. It has worked well for every other kid I know though.

About the variation in temperature taking. My advice is to practice taking your and your children's temperature while you and they are healthy. For one thing, not everyone has the `standard' 98.6 degree normal temperature; and for another thing it isn't always easy to get the tip pointed in the right direction once it is in the ear canal. It takes practice.

A good home purchase. (For really little babies we used a pacifier thermometer with great success.)

Customer Review: Very useful, definitely worth $30!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have two boys age 2 and 4 and have gotten A LOT of use out of ours over the past 4 years. Very reliable, useful and durable. It is great to be able to get the same reading as a rectal (the only reading doctors ask for) without the hassle of actually taking it rectally. Or trying to keep track of what different readings mean depending on how you took them (underarm, oral, rectal). As for the folks who have a problem getting an accurate reading -- 1) you just need to make sure you get it in the ear correctly (not difficult) and 2) I take the highest of three readings (which takes seconds). I mean, as a mom and not a doctor, I just need to know if its 101,2 or 3 and whether its going up or going down. (I have never seen a thermometer that would give the exact same reading to the decimal point three times in a row.)
