Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin BZ103050vTVL Mini Surge Protector/Dual USB Charger

Customer Review: Larger than expected - can charge only 1 iphone at a time!
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this item for home use. But, many people seem to want to use it for travel use and the previous reviewers are correct: it's entirely too large for travel. If I intended to use this for travel purposes, it'd return it immediately.

Also worth noting is that when I have a blackberry pearl and an iPhone 3GS (or, two iPhone 3GS) plugged into the USB charger, the iPhone constantly trips between charge/uncharge (making the annoying whistle sound). So, ** YOU CAN ONLY CHARGE ONE SMART PHONE AT A TIME ** using the USB charger.

The swivel is pretty easy to operate, and the device comes with a "charge-only" mini-usb cable which I wasn't expecting. It's pretty slim and lightweight compared to the charge/sync mini-usb cables.

PROS: works ok for home use, comes with usb charge cable, swivels, relatively cheap, works with iPhone 3GS.
CONS: rather large, won't allow more than one smart phone to charge using the USB ports.

Customer Review: Wish it had worked
Summary: 1 Stars

I just got this USB charger and surge protector from Amazon and was looking forward to having a device that would charge USB powered devices without needing to run a PC. We have a number of MP3 players and mobile phones that need regular charging but don't need a regular PC connection.

This device appeared to work fine when I got it. The next day my wife had moved the charging cables back to the Macbook and she said it was because the charger wasn't working. I moved the cables back, tried the charger, and it seemed to work so I got to tell her "operator error" ... :-)

Today, the third day I've had the charger, my wife had moved the cables again and this time the charger wouldn't work at all. Very irritating. And I hate having to admit she was right about something electronic ... :-)

So this is going back to Amazon and I'll look for something else.

Customer Review: Great travel accessory
Summary: 5 Stars

I do business travel regularly and have made a study on how to minimize what I pack. I never check luggage for trips up to a week long. The latest addition to my standard travel kit is the Belkin mini-surge protector and USB charger. It was a bit larger than the picture looked, but realistically the plug size and so forth limit how small it can be. I have used it on several trips, business and pleasure, and it has been great. The swivel plug lets it adapt well to all sorts of socket orientations. The two USB charging slots let me charge my phone, my iTouch, or my GPS without needing to get out my laptop or a different standalone USB charger. The three socket surge protector provides additional protection and two more sockets if I need them. Actually, I bought two of these. One went into my standard travel kit, the other on my home-office desk where I mostly use the USB charger feature.

Customer Review: Travels with me and my laptop everywhere now
Summary: 5 Stars

Best travel surge protector I've had. Yes it is a tad larger then I expected but it's not so big you can't just throw it right into your laptop bag without a second thought. It has a nice sturdy feel to it too. This thing really goes with me everywhere. It's the perfect compliment to any laptop bag.

The only single complaint I could possibly come up with for this is that the button you push in to swivel it around, seems like the spring behind mine is too heavy for it's own good. Have to really jam it in there which isn't all that easy when your fingers are larger then the hole the button goes in to. Then you have to hold it in while you move the plug around till you get it in the position you want. Not too big a deal though. I've just positioned the thing so the device plugs into a wall outlet horizontally and I doubt I'll ever need to reposition it again.

Customer Review: Sure is bulky!
Summary: 3 Stars

This seemed like the perfect idea for travel - every so often a hotel hasn't upgraded their wiring since 1933 and you get one plug in the room. As a gadget freak that's quite a challenge, so I routinely stock an extension cord so I can plug in my phone, computer, music player, camera battery etc. It's also handy in airports, where you can share an outlet in the gate area rather than hunt far and wide for an unused one (why are they so stingy about power in airports anyway??)

My only disappointment is the size: it's even bulkier than it looks online! Really. Why does it need to be so big?

It works as advertised and I am using it, but I don't think I'd buy it again. How about more USB jacks and fewer 120v? Maybe skip the ground prongs? There's got to be a way to make this smaller... it is for travel after all!
