Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 7-Port Lighted Hub

Customer Review: A choice well made
Summary: 5 Stars

I spent a few hours trying to choose the right USB hub and I believe I made a good decision with this one. I personally think that for 7 USB hubs, this is a very affordable product! I've had it for almost a month now and haven't experienced any problems with it. My regular use for it includes my mouse, headset, flash drive, and drawing tablet; it definitely has enough juice to power all three. However, if I want to plug in my iPhone, I have to unplug one of the devices. Not a big deal for me though because I'm more accustomed to charging my iPhone via wall socket and I don't find myself needing to sync my phone too often anyways. Lastly, the hub is much smaller than expected. It's really not much bigger than a credit card.

In reference to two problems addressed by other reviews... I personally love the blue lighting the hub features. It's not bright to the point where having it near my laptop is so distracting or bothersome. I enjoy using it as a nightlight and it goes well with the soft blue light my cooling pad also emits. It's also nice that it blinks when I have too many power-hogging devices plugged in at a time. As for the weight of the hub; it is indeed very light and I can see where it becomes a problem for some people. For me, it's not because when I have it plugged into my laptop, I have the cord wrapped up with a twist tie. So the cord is short enough to not be moved around.

An important thing to note, however. The USB cord that Amazon recommends you buy with this hub is not to be used to connect the hub to your laptop/desktop. Hopefully you can understand why this was perceived but that USB cord doesn't fit the hub; it's actually made to fit a USB to a printer or another device with the same sized plug. The hub comes with its own cord to connect it to your laptop/desktop and it measures in at ~6 ft./70 in./178 cm; a pretty generous length in my opinion.

Lastly, the hub is Mac/Windows compatible.
It doesn't gain heat.
And it doesn't emit any type of noise.

A great product at a reasonable price that definitely earns my recommendation! :]

Customer Review: Small But Beautiful 7 UBS Hub
Summary: 4 Stars

This 7 UBS hub is the first small computer accessory I have ever owned. It is small, light, but is beautifully disgned with two bright lights on both side at the top. The lights are very bright. Sometimes it is annoying if it is sitting in front of you. The AC adapter cable is only 3 foot in length which is too short in any case. Because the USB unit is very light, It is very hard to put it on the table steadily. I have used it with my an UBS wireless mouse, an UBS wired keyboard, a WD 1 TB external hard drive, a printer, an USB mini speaker system, and an USB flash drive. All of the above items are USB 2.0. I turned on all the equipments simultanously and worked for more than a few hours daily for 2 weeks. I found that all the attached equipments were working well. Even thought I was backing up my whole computer with my external hard drive, I could still use the others with no problem.
I do not own any USB 1.1 equipment, thus I do not know whether using that with USB 2.0 together will slow down the others or not. The only inconvenience I have encountered is the 3 foot cable which limits where I can put the hub and its light weight. That is why I take a star off. On the whole, I recommand this product to any one who needs extra USB connections.

Customer Review: Good USB Upgrade
Summary: 4 Stars

To start this off, I would like to say that i have been using this product for a few months now and it is really great. 7 USB ports should hold all of your devices, but if not you can buy another for around just a couple bucks. The price is a key factor of why I bought this which is really low compared to many USB hubs, and the quality is the same. Belkin is a well known brand and rarely fails in the quality department. There were a few complaints about the bright blue light. The light is in my bedroom, and I don't know how many other people will use this there, but it is not bright enough to keep you awake.Another complaint is that the AC charger is pretty short, I'd say about 3 feet, so you'll need to keep this near an outlet, which could be a problem for some of you. My only complaint personally is that it is USB 2.0 instead of 3.0. In this ever changing world of technology USB 3.0 is getting into the mix so i don't know how much longer this product will last. Other than that, this is great product, and I rate it 8/10.

Customer Review: Works, but dumb design elements
Summary: 2 Stars

Well, the thing does work, so it get's marks for fulfilling the basic requirement of added USB ports.

The blue light that Belkin sells as 'a unique design element' is plainly absurd. Why does a USB port need 2 lights on it? Why would anyone want their desk lit up blue - you can't read by it although it's bright enough to be annoying. It's a waste of electricity, albeit small, but really, do we need big lights on a USB port?????
It's the dumbest aspect of this thing and I wonder what the heck Belkin was thinking, not to mention the jerks in marketing that thought 'unique design' by having blue lights on it.
Anyway, from a functionality perspective, I get error messages all the time 'there is not enough power in the USB source, plug in for more power', when it is actually plugged in, so that's annoying.

The unit could feature claps or hooks so you could hook up to a wall. I use tack putty to keep the thing secure on my desk.

Would not buy one like this again.

Customer Review: Must plug in power BEFORE connecting USB to computer
Summary: 4 Stars

I've just rewritten my review as after talking to Customer Service I got a good representative who was able to identify why my new hub would not work properly (only finding two ports) with my Windows 7 64 bit computers, but would work with my XP machine. To power my 5 peripherals I had to use the external power to the hub and I was adding the power after I'd already plugged the hub into my computer. Anyway, I'm changing my rating for 1 star to 4 as the hub works as expected now. If you have a Win 7 computer, you should definitely plug the power cord in first before you add the device to your computer. My Win XP machine would easily find all 5 peripherals even without power - go figure. The lights on the hub are always on with the power which can be annoying if you don't want to see bright light at night. I'm happy now.
