Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin FireWire 800 ExpressCard with 2 External Ports ( F5U514 )Customer Review: Using This Product On My MacBook Pro 15" Required Workarounds Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased the F5U514 almost one year ago because I needed additional FireWire ports on my MacBook Pro 15" for external hard drives. The supplied software CD-ROM included drivers only for Windows, so I used it without installing a driver. I encountered weird problems, and had to come up with "workarounds" in order to use the product.
I was only able to power bus powered external drives by using a cable connected to the USB port on the other side of the MacBook Pro from the ExpressCard slot. The USB port on the same side as the ExpressCard slot, though it could power a mouse, would not provide enough voltage to power an external hard drive. I felt this was too inconvenient, and my first "workaround" was to use the F5U514 only with external hard drives plugged into an AC outlet.
If I let the MacBook Pro go to sleep while using the F5U514, I could not wake it from sleep. I had to hold down the power button to shut off the computer, then press the power button to restart it. My next "workaround" was to never let the MacBook Pro go to sleep while using the F5U514. I'd even start playing a long video file if I needed to leave the computer for a while but didn't want to shut it down.
Finally, and worst of all, treating the F5U514 like a hot-pluggable device led to kernel panics and the "curtain" coming down my screen. My final "workaround" was to never treat the F5U514 like a hot-pluggable device. I always inserted the F5U514, and connected and powered up the external hard drives before starting the computer. And I always unmounted the external hard drives and shut down the computer before removing the F5U514.
I've been able to use the product for almost a year as long as I stick to my "workarounds".
