Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin F5L001 Laptop Cooling PadCustomer Review: Best one out there, but could be better Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this cooling pad as a replacement to one made by Targus. I like it, but I'm annoyed at the "kickstand" that pops out of the bottom.
The "kickstand" is a flip-out pair of legs that tilts the keyboard of the laptop toward you when on a desk or table. It also allows air to get underneath the fan to promote airflow.
The problem is that this "kickstand" doesn't lock. If you need to move the laptop away from you on your desk, the "kickstand" suddenly folds into the fan housing and your laptop takes a bit of a crash backwards. Nothing that is probably going to hurt the computer, but it's damned annoying.
As the shape of the bottom of the housing is curved, it's impossible to just sit the laptop on the fan without using the "kickstand."
Other than that, it works very well. Cooling seems to be much better than the Targus model I used to have, and the "Swiss Army" one I bought to replace it before returning it to Walmart when the fan started making noises.
Customer Review: Motor burnt out after 6 months Summary: 1 Stars
I've had most laptop coolers let me down. This was my 5th. I've had Targus Brand USB cords break so easily and the motor burn out. So When Belkin was recommended, I bought this in August 2009.
I must say it's almost equally as terrible. I found it to better than the others I've used in the past because
A. It was quieter than others I've used
B. The cord Didn't break like others I've used
C. it lasted longer than others I've used
BUT It didn't last. That's the problem.
I've had it since August 2009, So As I type this, 6 months, And the motor to the fan died.
I'm tired of Electronics not lasting. They're trying to get as many sales out of a person as possible. They do the exact same thing with Movies and Video games, which is why Wal-Mart, Target, iTunes ETC. will get a bonus song, a bonus DVD, A Bonus something. What ever they can do to get paying customers to buy it more than once, They'll do it
AVOID - it won't last.
Customer Review: How a poor designed item can be sold everywhere Summary: 1 Stars
Maybe it is because is cheap, I don't know. But everywhere I see, this damn base is sold, many times as the unique option.
The design is very poor, who invented it never gave it a try. The retractable leg does not keep secure in place, so if you slightly push forward your laptop, the bae colapses. And because the USB cable does not have a secure outward path, gets damage every time the lid closes. And with the lid closed, the base is stable as a ball, because its unusefull curve shape in the bottom. I think also that is raises the laptop too much in the front part, where is not needed.
The lid also broke because a desing problem on a weak point.
The fan is very noisy.
So, for a piece of garbage that has only four parts, and all 4 parts are a disaster (fan, cable, lid and base), Belkin should retire this from lids and fire their designers.
Do not buy it, nor take it even if is for free (or prepare yourself to get angry and bored by the noise).
Customer Review: works when it works Summary: 2 Stars
I have owned my belkin laptop cooling stand for over a year now. It does a good job of cooling the computer but I have had many problems with it. First the power connection port became loose and was pushed inside the unit where it could not be accessed. I took apart the stand (remove 9-10 screws) and glued it in place and have had no other problems with that.
The biggest problem is the cheap, noisy, fan in the unit. The standard 80mm fan 5v fan frequently (like 9 times a day) requires attention. At this point I am taking the unit apart every couple days to clean and service the fan so that it (1) works and (2) will run more quietly. Usually I can blow dirt or dust off the fan or jar it and it will function properly again for a short while.
I have looked into replacing the fan but the shipping for a replacement fan costs 2-3 times as much as the fan and I refuse to pay that sort of shipping. I am currently looking for a cooling pad that has better quality parts.
Customer Review: Considering trying a different brand Summary: 3 Stars
After having my laptop video die on me from overheating, I decided to try a cooler. This was the only brand carried at the electronics store I went to so I didn't have much choice. It worked nicely from day one. The temp of my computer was much less intense than without it. But there are a few things that I don't care for so I'm looking for a different brand.
The fan is intermittantly loud. It also gets very dusty. I can go several weeks without putting my laptop away and finding all that dust on the fan is a little disturbing. I'm not sure that it's working as well as it did in the beginning and I'm not sure if the dust buildup has something to do with that.
I use the cooler in an angled position for better typing and there have been times that the piece that flips out for the angle will not stay open.
All in all, I have gotten my money's worth from this product. But I think I would like to try another brand to see if there isn't room for more improvement.
