Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin 6-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Rotating Plug and 8' Cord

Customer Review: Perfect Performance but A Bit Overpriced
Summary: 3 Stars

I have to admit that I LOVE the functionality of this cord--I specifically needed a flat cord because I intentionally placed a bookcase in front of the outlet in my newborn son's nursery and ran the cord down, hidden by the bookcase, to plug into the wall. Obviously a traditional, thick three-pronged surge protector would push the bookcase out too far. I have things like a wipes warmer, video monitor, etc, that I can plug in up high on his bookcase and the plug is safely out of his reach. So, I didn't really have a choice in buying a flat plug in.

That said, while this works perfectly and I rated the flat plug-in functionality 5 stars, it just burns me that I had to spend literally three times as much for this simple feature. Sure, Belking tends to be better quality than off-brands and you typically get what you pay for. Still, their regular surge protectors can be found on here for 1/3 this price!

As best I can tell this is just a normal old surge protector, no special upgraded surge protection qualities, just three times as much for a nifty feature. I obviously went for it, but that does affect my rating and took it from a 4-star to a 3-star. It's a bit, as my husband would say, of highway robbery. So come on, Belkin! Equalize that price out some!

Customer Review: Great product - rotating plug is genius
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a couple of these recently from a retailer who shall be nameless. They are low cost and seem to have reasonable quality. I wouldn't bet that their surge suppression is very effective - I just want something that provides more plugs. The plug head rotates so you can use these with the top or bottom plug of a two plug outlet, unlike most power strips - normally if you plug into the top plug socket, the head and cord of the strip blocks the bottom plug socket. Because this head rotates and the head is quite small, you can rotate the cord so it doesn't cover the bottom socket. Also if you need to run a cable vertically up a wall, this will allow you to do that without any trouble.

The only downside to this device is that all the plug sockets on the strip are aligned in the same direction. So if you have a lot of "wall warts" with the bulk of the device *below* the electrical prings, then you'll run out of space rapidly with this device. There are solutions to that and lots of power strips have this problem, but I thought I would mention it..

Customer Review: 2.5ft version does not have the flat plug
Summary: 4 Stars

The most interesting feature of this product is the flat plug. It is very thin and allows us to use contacts that would otherwise be obscured by furniture. Other than that, it is a power strip and it serves its purpose.
We purchased the 8ft cord version to use behind a couch and we were very satisfied, so we decided to order another one to use behind a bookcase. The cord didn't need to be that long, so we ordered the 2.5ft cord version... oh surprise!.. this one does not have the flat plug (which was the whole point of the purchase). It has a regular plug just like the powerstrip we wanted to replace. Of course, we are returning it but I wanted to warn other people ...The website description is somewhat misleading and the fact that the picture for the 2.5ft does not show the plug, does not help.
Beware.. the 8ft version has a flat plug, the 2.5ft version does not.

Customer Review: Great for what I need
Summary: 5 Stars

Rotating flat plug is excellent, you can pretty much accomodate any need without blocking plugs, and it really is quite flat. This is just an inexpensive power strip and that's great. I probably have 10 power strips around my house, and who wants to pay a lot for them?

I notice a reviewer complaining about fried equipment. If I had anything expensive to plug in, I'd put it on a Cyberpower or APC UPS with AVR. I don't expect any power strip to do much to protect against big power spikes. Even a high-priced power strip is still just feeding you raw power out of the wall with some sort of switch-to-ground in case something spikey comes along. With the Automatic Voltage Regulating UPS you can get clean power and even Pure Sine Wave output but you won't get that in a cheap little power strip.

Customer Review: Melted into our outlet within ONE week!
Summary: 1 Stars

Well, it looked great, nice and compact, BUT within one week, a fishy smell developed in the corner where the outlet was. When I researched fishy smells in houses, surprisingly, electrical problems came up. So, when I pulled out the plug (where the surge protector plugs into the wall,) the plug was melting and burning, and, in fact, left its metal prongs in our outlet! So, by unplugging it, our house didn't burn down (a good thing), but now we have an unusable outlet until we get an electrician in (a bad thing.) Buyer beware! Btw, we've used Belkin surge protectors for YEARS in the same outlet with NO PROBLEM; I think it's just this model/design that's faulty.
