Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin 6-Outlet Home/Office Surge ProtectorCustomer Review: Questionable quality, but it's relatively cheap Summary: 2 Stars
I've bought a couple of other belkin surge protectors several years ago due to their reputation, I haven't had a power surge or lightning strike that I know of, so I can't tell you if they really do more than provide multiple outlets. As they are I'm content with them.
This one seems ok. It doesn't have the light that the more expensive ones have to show that it's switched on or not. I think my other two also have lights that show that the surge protection part is still functional, I don't know if the surge protection part wears out over time, or how it works actually.
For this one however, if you have those brick sized plugs, it's going to cover up at least two outlets due to the outlet spacing on the strip.
When I plug in an item there is a lot of resistance, on some of the outlets more than others, like something is slightly out of place blocking the outlet a bit. I'm thinking I should return it, in case it's an indication that the surge protector is poorly made and it might not work.
I currently have doubts about Belkin's reputation in general, as I've been seeing online that they paid .65 cents per positive review at amazon, new egg, and buy.com (regardless of whether person had bought product or not). [...]
It does not surprise me though that people are faking reviews on websites, I've found some to sound overly enthusiastic and treated them with a grain of salt (particularly with books). It's just too bad that it's to the extent described in the article.
Customer Review: Do Not Buy! Flickers On and Off and Cannot Be Used! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this because it was cheap. Well, I got what I paid for. I plugged my TV, cable box, and wireless router into this strip and watched TV for awhile. It seemed to work fine. Then I walked across the room and opened a door and boom, all three of those devices went out. I'm not exaggerating, all it took was opening the door vigorously for the power to flicker and the devices to turn off. I went back and tried repositioning the power strip, turning it off, turning it back on, everything I could think of. Simply by moving it around, I would cause the power to flicker and the devices would turn off and then turn back on again a moment later when I moved the power strip again. I can't tell if it's because the switch on top is finicky -- it has an "off" position and a "reset" position, but no clearly marked "on" position, so the middle position must be "on" but the switch is so floppy and insubstantial that you can't tell what position it is in. The problem may also be that the internal wiring on my model is faulty, hence the flickering. Whatever the reason, it doesn't work. I plugged my devices back into the wall directly and they work fine. Spend a bit more and don't waste your money taking a chance on this power strip. I'm kind of irritated because it's not worth the hassle to send it back so I'll just have to go buy a better one at Target or someplace.
Customer Review: Great value, slim, protected location of the on/off switch Summary: 5 Stars
I work in the IT industry, so every time people move offices they come to me for a power strip. I buy these power strips regularly because:
1. They have seemed to protect adequately for surges
2. They are very compact
3. They are cheap!!!!
4. The big one-- the power switch is on the side where the power cable exits the strip. This has a big advantage.
You'd be amazed how many times people, cleaning crews or others accidentally flip the power switch on a power strip that may be under the edge of a desk or in an area that can get bumped but isn't easily seen. That also causes problems because people don't understand why their stuff isn't working. Having the switch on the side dramatically reduces the frequency with which I get calls because "stuff stopped working"... No one ever expects the simple answer and always assume a device has gone bad, etc.
The color fits in with your average office creme color, and unless you are going to get a power squid or UPS I wouldn't spend more on a power strip than the cost of this.
Customer Review: Works, but no 'indicator light' to show surge protection is functioning Summary: 3 Stars
Brought two of these the other day been using them for a week and they seem to work fine. Got these based on the reviews that they are cheap, simple, and works.
However, after a bit more research online I would pass on this purchase if I had to order it again. Apparently, most surge protectors have a 'indicator light' on the switch or device itself to show that surge protection is working. If the light goes out it means the surge protector was damaged in a past surge and is not longer offering protection and needs to be replaced. The device however will continue to function as a basic power strip.
This product has no such 'indicator light'. Therefore you can never tell if the surge protection is still working or not. Consequently, I would only recommend using this product for basic electronics that you don't care too much about e.g. phone chargers, etc. For more expensive electronics like home entertainment systems, TV's, or computers, I would go with a better product.
Customer Review: A good unit for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I wanted a basic power strip with surge protection. This one just fits my needs.
It has surge protection for small appliances (up to 555 Joules), and only basic Electro-Magnetic protection. So this is not for TV/sound equipments (which are sensible to EM interferences).
The design is sleek, but the 6 outlets are closely spaced, and if you use more than one power adapter, you will find this unit won't suit your needs. Once you plug two adapters, that's about it !
For a computer / TV use I recommend outlet strips from Smart Strip such as the Smart Strip LCG5 Energy Saving Power Strip with Auto switching Technology and Modem/Coaxial Surge Protection, which gives you plenty of outlet space, surge/EM protection, and saves you money on standby power.
