Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother HL-5250DN Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex

Customer Review: Connected to a wireless network in no time.
Summary: 5 Stars

This machine has two great features: (1) the option of automatic DUPLEX (two-sided) printing, and (2) it's a NETWORK READY printer.
I had the 5250DN up and running on a wireless network in no time. I just ran a short ethernet cable from the printer to a Linksys WET54G Wireless Bridge ($75-80) which in turn picks up a signal from a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router a few rooms away. The router dynamically assigns the printer an IP address on the network. The "BRAdmin" software on the supplied CD found the new printer on the network almost instantaneously. From there it was just a few more mouse clicks and a bit of typing on each computer using the network to install the printer driver and to direct them to print via a Standard TCP/IP address. All worked beautifully on the first try. The machine is
So now I have tucked the printer out of sight in a side closet. Now any machine on the network can print DIRECTLY to the printer from any room in the house. Amazing.
For the money, this is one of the best purchases I have made considering that (after the Brother rebate) I paid less than $300 for the whole package including the wireless bridge. Very highly recommended.

Customer Review: Nothing but praise sofar
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this one to replace/supplement my brother Hl-1440 after several years. The old one still works after a roller change and several toner replacement.

I bought this one since I have needed a duplex printer for a long time to save the trees and me some money on paper. I use the USB today and I might use the network feature depending on how I setup the network.

I have only owned the 5250DN for about a week now and its been flawless sofar. I have not had any problems with power surges or lights dimming etc.

Sounds from the printer when printing is low and totally acceptable, in my mind.

I like that it have both USB and Parallel, since I have 4 printers, 3 one usb and 1 on parallel(hl-1440). So IF needed I can connect to parallel.

The choice I had was either HL-5240 or HP-2015DN. The Hp doesnt have parallel at all (according to specs). Price and previous brother printer won me over.

I also liked that installing more memory is "so easy that even a caveman can do it".

I have not yet used all feature and functions but if I have a problem, I will come back and edit this review.

Customer Review: Cheap network printer (good cheap AND bad cheap)
Summary: 3 Stars

For the price, it's hard to beat this printer's features, particularly duplex and networking. The print quality is fine. The build quality is not, however. Within 2 months of ownership, the printer started making a LOUD "click" for several minutes after each job. I called Brother, they verified the problem was in the printer, not in the drum/toner unit, and they exchanged the printer through the mail completely for free. Two months later, the new printer started clicking in the same way. I believe it's an inherent hardware defect. I'll just use the printer until it dies, and next time I'll buy something of higher quality.

UPDATE, TWO YEARS LATER: I've owned this printer now for several years. The envelope feeder recently stopped working: it cannot pull the waiting envelope inside to print on it. Then yesterday the printer jammed (a rare occurrence), and when I pulled the paper out, the printer is no longer able to feed paper at all. It makes a VERY loud cracking sound (3 times louder than the usual sound) and no paper gets fed. So I consider this printer dead right now. It had a good life, but I was never 100% happy with it.

Customer Review: Paper handling problems & foreign instructions
Summary: 3 Stars

My chief complaint with the new Brother laser -- the third Brother laser I've owned -- is that it misfeeds after about three pages when you are attempting to print the backside of a document. It did this four times in a row so now I just print out back sides of a document three pages at a time. A real nuisance.

The other surprise was when I attempted to go into advanced setup instructions. Unfortunately, my German is lacking so it is a struggle to do anything beyond the initial print instructions page, which is in English. If there is a way to change the language it's a secret to me, and the Brother technical support is poor. Instead, I don't even know how to address this problem.

I probably would have been as well off to buy one of Brother's lower-priced models because all I can do with this one is basic, basic stuff.
They over promote the duplex printing phase. It's actually nothing that you can't do with their simplest models -- and when the pages doublefeed, as they do after the third page on the backside -- you've gained only frustration.

Not one of my wiser investments.

Customer Review: I couldn't be happier
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this printer for approximately two years and put it through moderate use. I print something nearly every day. I am a student and print lots of drafts of papers and presentations. I don't typically print exceptionally long items, so I don't have a lot of experience with more than about 30 pages at a time. But I always use the duplex function, it was what pushed me towards buying this product in the first place. I love that I can use less paper, especially for rough drafts or miscellaneous printing. I have used a variety of papers including card stock. It definitely gets a little touchy with other papers and I've had a few times where multiple sheets will be pulled through when using the front slot. I am still on my first toner cartridge but getting close to the end. The toner light came on about two weeks ago and then went back off, so I figure any day now.

As far as price goes, I don't remember how much I paid, between $150 and 200. I felt it was a good price, I had been through so many ink jet printers that I was sick of replacing them every six months to a year. This printer has met all my expectations.
