Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother HL-5250DN Network Ready Laser Printer with DuplexCustomer Review: Excellent small business network printer. Summary: 5 Stars
I needed a printer for my home network consisting of Linux, OS X, and Windows XP machines. I had a very difficult time trying to find a network printer that worked with all three operating systems and didn't break the bank. Several other vendors charged as much as $240 for the network "upgrade" unit to their printers! I finally purchased this printer based on reviews of older Brother models. Thus far I couldn't be happier. The printer is quiet in sleep mode and wakes up in 30-40 seconds to handle my print jobs. The Web interface is simple and gets the job done. The lpd interface works great with my linux machines and the cups ppd file found on Brother's support site worked without any snags.
The print quality is very sharp, even in toner saver mode. The printer also supports duplexing, yet another option most other companies charged around $100 for. Graphics are on par to what I've seen on larger office HP laserjets. Standard text is printed very fast. Documents from word that are mostly text print very close to the 30ppm advertised.
The only drawback that I can see is the printer drum head is only rated for 25,000 pages and Brother recommends replacing it. Even so, this makes it an excellent printer for people looking to add to a home network or small business environment.
Customer Review: Awesome printer!! Summary: 5 Stars
I would heartily recommend this printer to anyone looking for a reliable, good quality printer.
Pros:
- Built-in duplexing at a reasonable price: this is like a dream come true for me. No more turning the page over and feeding it into the printer again!
- Built-in networking: again very convenient. I connected this to my home wireless router using a regular network cable and was immediately printing from across the house using my laptop's wireless connection.
- Very fast: this is so much faster than the old HP 4L it replaced!
- Excellent quality: The text is very clear with no dots visible anywhere - exactly what you would expect from a quality laser printer. Images are not bad either though you certainly can't compare with a photo-quality inkjet (most laser printers have this problem so no biggie!)
- Did I mention reasonable price? Less than a couple of hundred after rebates is excellent considering the features and quality.
Cons:
- I did notice the high power draw, but the flickering of my home lights went away after I connected it to its own dedicated power outlet.
This is currently one of the highest rated laser printers and I can certainly see why - Brother has hit the nail on the head with this one!
Customer Review: Brother quality is a thing of the past Summary: 1 Stars
I've been using my Brother HL-5250DN printer for about a month, and I have been bitterly disappointed with the quality and performance.
The construction quality is poor-- thin, low-grade plastic, nothing like the Brother HL-1440 I replaced. The flimsy fold-down door for feeding envelopes sticks to the door which contains the drum and toner. It takes two hands to open it without risking breakage. The adjustable track for feeding envelopes is cheesy beyond belief. I doubt it would last a year. The printer creases envelopes, and I've already wasted lots of expensive stationery.
The duplex function-- which is the reason I bought this newer printer-- seems to work so far, but judging from the other reviews, I should cross my fingers.
Finally, this printer is quite noisy. Anyone who needs a quiet unit should look elsewhere.
I foolishly ignored the negative reviews and bought this printer anyway, based on my superior experience of my Brother HL-1440, which is rock-solid and works perfectly after many, many years. (I bought it so long ago I can't even remember where or when.) I'm going back to it.
I will never again buy a printer without checking the quality first-hand.
Customer Review: Best Printer I've Owned So Far! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been in the Graphics Design/Typesetting business since 1996 and I've owned HP, Samsung and Lexmark printers prior to buying my Brother HL-5250DN monochrome laser printer. Shortly after purchasing this printer, I was asked to design a two sided, tri-fold mailer. My customer wanted to use the Zapco 67 lb. vellum bristol cover stock. Originally, I designed the flyer and sent the camera ready artwork to my local off-set printer for production. Because of the grayscale photographs, the off-set printer could not make a decent silvermaster plate of the artwork and told me he was going to have to have metal plates made. This increased the price of the job by $100.00. Since my customer was only needing 1,500 mailers, he didn't want to spend that extra money. Because the flyer was going to be black on white, I told him I'd try to print them on my laser printer. I wasn't very optomistic until they started printing. What a shock! I was able to print all 1,500, two sided, mailers. I did have one paper jam but considering I was using heavy cardstock with the automatic duplexer, I was very well pleased. Needless to say, I used an entire toner cartridge (T550) and part of a (T580) but the quality was very impressive.
Customer Review: After thorough research, I bought three of them Summary: 5 Stars
I meticulously researched available printers. I wanted a laser for quality printing without worrying about dried out ink cartridges when I didn't print anything for a long time. I wanted duplex printing to save paper. I didn't even know this printer could print multiple pages on a sheet until after I set it up. That was a welcome bonus! I wanted something to produce quality graphics and photo print-outs, not too expensive to purchase or to maintain, with low cost per page / toner use. I got it all.
Granted, with the built in networking capability, we could have networked one printer for the three computer users in the house, but conflicting schedules (like a college student who prints through the night and into the morning) caused us to buy three. I'm glad we did.
Setup was a breeze, and we're all still working off the default settings for the printer drivers, with no complaints. I don't know anything about the brown-out power consumption issues, since I don't have a UPS. The printer warms up in a matter of seconds, goes to sleep fairly quickly when not in use, and wakes up again with hardly a delay.
This is a great printer. Don't hesitate to buy one. Or three.
