Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother HL-5250DN Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex

Customer Review: Another Winner from Brother
Summary: 5 Stars

I print a lot, most of it double-sided Government documents. This printer is a gem. It is fast, produces clean crisp copies, is reasonably quiet, and is low cost - both in purchase price and consumables.

It replaced a prior Brother laser (HL-1850) that also duplexed. The new printer is much faster, quieter, and cheaper than the old printer. The price of the printer was less than the price of a new toner cartridge and drum unit.

As more and more documents are printed on both sides these days - call it green or smart or frugal - the ability to have automatic duplexing becomes more important. The HL-5250DN offers both automatic and manual duplexing. (Why one would want to use manual duplexing is beyond me.) Most duplexing available allows for the printing as if you were reading a book bound on the left side. The 5250 also allows for duplexing where you flip the documents upward (as if in a prong folder or clipboard) as well as from the bottom or the right. It is the most versatile printer duplexing I have found.

The built-in networking worked the first time and the set-up was easy. The copies are sharp and clear with excellent registration.

There are two areas where the old Brother printer (HL-1850) was superior to the new one - there is no straight through paper path so envelopes and other bulky items may now sometimes develop wrinkles when printed and there are no status messages, just flashing indicator lamps.

With drivers for Windows (including Vista), Mac, and Linux I can easily recommend this printer.

Customer Review: Terrible quality
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased a HL-5250DN printer in July of 2006. It is extremely flimsy but it worked fine after installation. However, after only one month the Ethernet connection died. At the advice of Brother I brought it to a local certified service technician for repair in August. I picked it up a few weeks alter after the motherboard had been replaced. After I brought it home all prints showed significant smudging, streaks and ghost images. After significant time spent discussion this problem with Brother and trying to clean it with their service department on the phone, they reluctantly agreed to send me a replacement and take this one back. I received the replacement in October of 06. The prints from this machine were fine. However, it sounded like a broken piece of farm equipment when printing. While it did print it was obvious that any device making this kind of noises will break down. Sure enough, on November 1st this year it stopped working unable to pick up paper and move it through the machine. We did not even use the starter toner cartridge that came with it and the extra unopened cartridge I bought with it will go on eBay.

I can only advice you not to buy Brother. This is the poorest piece of electronics equipment I have ever come across. It is obviously annoying to waste $200 on a printer that lasts only one year. Thinking about the thousands of devices that are made to just survive the warranty period and then turn into mountains of waste is even more depressing. Do yourself and the environment a favor and stay away from this product.

Customer Review: Good, Solid, Fast, but quirky
Summary: 4 Stars

The price is definitely right for this full featured printer. Something like this would have cost 5 times as much a few years ago. The printer is really fast, in both image generation, as well we printing output. The network connectivity just worked fine for me out of the box. All in all, pretty easy to install and operate, with terrific print quality

Now the quirks. It creaks like an old house on a windy winter night (sounds weird, but I can't think of any other way to describe it). If its sleeping, when you send a job to it, it'll start creaking, moaning and groaning, then the prints fire out at lightning speed.

The paper tray is quirky too.... it has an amount of paper that it likes (less than the stated capacity), and any more than that, it seems to jam (this could be what some of the other reviewers have been noticing). Also, the tray adjustments are VERY tight, so you need to adjust them out in order to use standard US type letter paper in order to have reliable paper feeds.

I use the direct competitor from HP in my office, and other than costing TWICE as much as the Brother, supplies are also double, and it is LOUD! Sounds like a diesel truck when its printing. But no creaks though

But the bottom line, is that this is a fine product, all quirks aside. Considering the overall value here, I would not hesitate to buy this printer again, especially considering how affordable Brother supplies are. Other than the groans and creaks, highly recommended.

Customer Review: The Best of the Rest !
Summary: 5 Stars

My HP 1500L print suddenly stopped working the other day. I tried every thing to revive it, but it died on me. I even tried doing CPR with the aid of Customer Support at HP who wanted me to pay for their support. It did not work! Anyway, Good Bye to it! Thank you for your companionship for five years!

I print a lot everyday say 400 to 500 pages! Mostly black, but I also print 10 - 15 color pages as cover for my presentations.

I decided to look for a printer. I read lots of reviews on Amazon.com and other websites online and found reviews of Brother HL-5250DN Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex the most interesting! So I decided to buy it.

To intall this printer, I never read the manual, it was like intuitively the printer's presence was guiding me to what to do! It took me no more than ten minutes to open the box, right upto printing the first test page. It's the most beautiful prints I have ever seen!

I then printed fifty pages to see it's speed, it was amazing, I saw the printer churning out pages upon pages that I never saw before!

Brother HL-5250DN Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex is truly the printer of the 23rd Century! Its fast, economical and worth the last penny!

I need a color laser printer for the cover of my presentations, so I am going to review some of them again! Well I have found it, it's Dell 3110cn. Dell and Brother is a unique combination!

I admire My Brother HL-5250DN printer! It's my best investment!

Customer Review: Almost perfect, and yet....
Summary: 3 Stars

This sounded like exactly the printer I wanted, but I was a little trepidacious about the power issues I saw noted here. But I have a newer house with reasonable circuits, so surely this wouldn't be a problem in my home office. I picked it up.

Installation was a breeze. I had the printer connected to my Mac (10.4) in minutes, once I realized that the printer used Rendezvous and I had to get it on the network to install the driver. Yes, I have been trained by years of Windows to install the driver first.

I then set up duplexing by default on the printer setup and proceded to print out a large documnet in 2up mode, double sided. Four hundred pages condensed to 100 sheets of paper. The printer was quick, fairly quiet, and very legible.

But from the minute I turned on the printer, one of the UPSes started clicking on and off. The dreaded "undervoltage" issue I had read about here. So I shut it down, and the clicking stopped. On, more clicking. Off, no clicking. It was the printer.

When I tried it again later at night, I noticed something I didn't see during the day. It actually dimmed the room lights. Considerably.

I love the feature set of this printer. Built in networking prvides a lot of flexibility. Print is fast and clear, and the duplexing works great. But the power issue is a deal killer for me. I have returned this printer. At this point, I would buy a new Brother model if the power issues were fixed, but not until then.
