Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Bose SoundDock digital music system for iPod (Black)Customer Review: It's worth it with the recent price reduction! Summary: 4 Stars
Let me get straight to the point: I've read nearly every review out there on the SoundDock and I think if you're in the market for an iPod music player that looks and sounds great this machine should be at or near the top of your shopping list. After being on the market for years with little change and many new competitors, this unit is still used for comparison purposes when defining good sound. I actually have mine on a tall bookcase where the SoundDock sits between books. It is only a foot wide, 6 inches deep, and 7 inches tall. The sound by the way is an "up front" (close-miked) type of sound that's very clear. It is not muddy at all and may actually sound at first to have too much treble for some ears; however, the voices sound like they're in the room with you and there's enough good bass (perhaps not room shaking but solid) as well; probably more than you'd expect from 3" speakers. My room is 20' x 20' feet with 10' foot ceilings and this definitely fills the room with sound. The only downside is the remote. There is no playlist function; the only thing you can do is go back and forth from song to song and once the playlist ends you've got to go over to the iPod/SoundDock and pick another playlist manually. In the end, there may be other iPod music systems out there that are heavier, cost more (or less), have better remotes and features, maybe sound better (?), but when it came to putting my money on the counter, the Bose SoundDock was the winner!
Customer Review: Great sound in a compact design Summary: 4 Stars
I am a casual user of audio equipment. We have 3 IPODs in our home (one for each family member, my wife, my daughter and myself). Because this product has recharging capability, we take turns recharging our IPODs; however, we also have charging cords in other rooms.
What attracted me to this product was the simple design: This is a sound dock that your IPOD fits into. Volume, power, play and advance song/replay song can be controlled with a small remote control. The base of the unit has a button for increasing or decreasing volume.
Construction is solid, heavy in weight (adding to stability) and a piano gloss black finish. Although this unit is portable, it is not practical to travel with this system. The external transformer is a bit of a negative which adds even more weight to the unit.
Sound quality is great for a compact set of speakers with a powerful base. There are no adjustments for parameters, such as treble, bass, mid-range frequencies. Your only option to adjust any sound parameters is to make adjustments within your IPOD.
Limitations: There is no way to navigate through the menu system utilizing the remote control.
VERDICT:
Aside from its minor flaws, this is a great system for listening to your IPOD without taking a lot of space.
Highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: ***SIMPLY AWESOME*** Summary: 5 Stars
Acoustically and Aesthically, this SoundDock beats them all.
I am 110% happy with this purchase. Although, I may be slightly biased as I was able to purchase them at a discounted price. Bose products are expensive, but I have greatly enjoyed all of them.
As a musician of 15+ years, I'd like to think that I have a credible reference point when it comes to music. The sounddock simply sounds incredible when listening to voice, opera, instrumental, piano, etc. Voice representation on the sound dock sounds as if the singer was giving you a private concert. It's that good!
I've heard complaints about the bass when listening to techno. Although, I do listen to an above average amount of techno, I mainly listen to softer, soothing music with the sounddock. It sits in my bed room and I often turn the music on in the morning, or at night when I want to listen to something soft. I save the thumping techno for the car.
Of the three Bose products I own (SoundDock, Companion 3's, and Bose On-Ear Headphones), I consider this one the best. I am consistently amazed with the sound quality. Although, I have heard praise for the Apple Hi-Fi's, personally, I did not like how big the units were when I was looking for a simple shelf speaker!
Go out and see for yourself. This unit is incredible!
Customer Review: Concert Hall Sound Summary: 4 Stars
The price is quite expensive and the size is so small that I really wondered if it could "deliver the goods".
It can!
As compact as the SoundDock is, Bose put every last effort into their product so that it produces clear, crisp sound that can fill most rooms.
The wireless remote is also a nice touch as it not only allows you the luxury of "skipping tracks", you can also adjust the volume (and, in case it isn't clear, this unit can be cranked up quite loudly) but turn it off as well. In that mode, your iPod will still charge so you'll never be caught with a low battery.
Problems? Room for improvement? Yes to both. The SoundDock is basically just a music machine - nothing more. It should have the capability of allowing you to "synch" to your iTunes instead of having to take the iPod out, put in the USB cord, etc. Improvements? It would be nice if the unit could be made (by anybody so I am not holding Bose responsible)so that you can see the iPod screen (turn it off at will) and be able to scroll through your play list. Also, for video iPod's, it would be a treat to "hear and see" the music.
But those are small quibbles and, after you hear the perfect sound, you'll be happy.
Customer Review: The finalist that wasn't chosen Summary: 4 Stars
I'm a middle-aged man who likes good music reproduced well. My idea of musical heaven: Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" played LOUD on early Fisher speakers (1960's era) powered by a Sansui amplifier (1970's era). So it has been difficult to grow old, to downsize, to go digital. But finally I have.
What did I choose to deliver the sound burned into my I-pod nano?
It took two months of regular visits to electronic stores--Victor Wooten and "Fanfare for the Comman Man" and Leonard Cohen in pocket--to decide. There were three finalists: the Bose SoundDock, the Klipsch iGroove, and the Harman Kardon Go + Play.
The Klipsch was good, but was only considered because of price. (I wasn't sure I wanted to spend $300 for a boombox. The Bose was $299; the Harman Kardon was $349; the Klipsch was $150.)
The Bose was my choice--clearer, crisper sound than the Harman Kardon which had better bass and seemed louder--but, because of price, I was never able to pull the trigger.
So the Harman Kardon, now playing in the background, was purchased because it was available from Harman Kardon (directly through eBay) for $120 delivered.
I'm very happy, but still miss the youth of my ears.
