Customer Review: Bose triport IE review, and an aside on the shure e2c
Summary: 5 Stars

As a musician and audiophile, I feel that I know what I'm listening for when assessing sound quality. I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one who was torn between buying the Bose in-ear and the Shure e2c, so I bought both of them.

Bose Triport IE

The bose earbuds are simply put, remarkable. The drivers pump a healthy range of tone without distortion. The bass is especially good. By good bass I mean that low frequencies such as cellos in classical music crawl on you during crescendos. I Played at least 6 different genres of music through these. The buds definitely bring the concert to your head with pure warm tone.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: you might find that you have to change the eq on your device to match the bose circuitry. My personal preference on the ipod is an eq set to acoustic. Others recommend disabling the eq.

For those considering the Shure E2c:

- The shures are very good! They're not great but when fitted properly in your ear (i used the foam tips) they too pump a nice range of tone. However, I found that the shure sound felt "artificial;" it lacked the warmth and pureness that the bose had. I didn't find a bass deficiency as some other reviewers mentioned although the bass frequencies were nothing special. The shures have that great noise isolating design that blocks out external sound, a big plus if a majority of your listening is spent in very noisy areas.

The bottom line:
You can't go wrong with either bud.
If you want the best audio experience, go with the bose.
If you're willing to sacrifice some sound quality for isolation, the shures might be for you.

Customer Review: Not worth the dough

I was supremely disappointed in these earphones. I needed something to go with my Ipod b/c I was sick of the cheapo ones that came with it. I thought going for more expensive ones would mean they'd last longer. I paid $100 for them...such a waste of money.

First, I loved LOVED the feel of the gel pieces. There are three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. All three fit comfortably in my ears although my #1 choice was the Medium. The sound was fantastic and they reasonably blocked out noise. I ride the train and wear them when walking to work, so I don't need to be totally oblivious of sound. However, as nice as the gel pieces were, they are more sensitive than I could have ever imagined. If they get hooked on anything, they come off. If I place them on my desk and they get hooked on a book or something, they'll come off. If my arm or purse hooks on the chord, the earphones will come off and the gel thing would still be in my ear. I've had them come off in the street or in the car or just plain lost them. That's how sensitive they are. It doesn't take much effort on your part.

By the time I decided that I maybe need to just superglue the most comfy set to the earphones, I was down to, I think, 3 of 6 gel pieces. Also, if I did superglue them, the remaining pieces or if I got replacements would be worthless.

I'm not rough on my things, especially when they cost as much as these did, but the chord also started coming apart. I finally just chucked them b/c I didn't want to go through replacing them only to probably deal with the same thing again.

This was just an unacceptable product.

Customer Review: The Best sound I've ever heard from in ear head phones.
Summary: 5 Stars

First thing you have to know about me is I love Music almost all types from rock to rap and Classical to jazz to country etc, even a little Latin. I've been looking for the perfect head phones for my 160 GB IPod since I got it about a year ago just after it came out. First off the head phones that come with the IPod are garbage. The base sounds really bad. I got rid of those right away. Next I tried 12 - 15 dollar Sony ear buds but the base was nothing special. Not bad granted but nothing special. I then found the Sony MDR-EX55LP in ear head phones and thought I was done even the salesman at the store said don't waste your money on the Bose the Sony head phones are better and cheaper. One day I was in my local mall and wondered in to the Bose store. They had a pair of these in-ear head phones to try out. I said what the Hay it's worth a try. Let's see how the sound compared to the Sony's I already had. Boy was I shocked. They where a hundred times better. The sound is so much richer and clearer. When I bought my pair about a month ago I even found out that the problem with the base in most hip-hop/rap tracks I had been having was no longer there. Now grated that is not 100%. Try the track "A Milli" by Lil' Wayne and the base problem is not completely gone but 95 percent of the time is almost non existent. also I'd been having a problem at work where my Sony head phones would get very tangled up in my pocket while on the job witch I feel it very bad for the ear buds and Bose offers a free carrying case the solves that problem. Over all the best 100 Dollars I even spent! My ears have been thanking ever since.

Customer Review: Well worth the $99
Summary: 5 Stars

Over the years I've tried various hearphones, in the ear and full over the ear models. With in the ear headphones, you have to be realistic with the results you're going to get with such a tiny headphone, you're never going to get the same quality as a really good full over the ear headphone.

My previous favorite headphones were the Shure E3's. However, the rubber ear pieces that are stuck into your ear canal can get uncomfortable after a while and the "vacuum" type seal creates an amplification of anything that hits the chords, also if you have any nasal congestion, it greatly amplifies that while breathing and translates through the heaphones. The bass response is also fairly flat. They do have great clarity and sound detail.

I just purchased the Bose in the ear headphones and am very very pleased with the difference compared to the E3's. Much better bass response, if not a touch muddy, the sound if much fuller. The comfort is MUCH improved as there isn't a "vacuum" created by the tight rubber ear piece seal of the E3's. The soft rubber ear pieces gently rest just inside your ear but don't form a tight seal.

I do like the high level of sound isolation from outside extraneous sounds you get with the E3's due to the tight seal, so I prefer these when on the subway or in a plane traveling, however I am very pleased with the improved comfort and sound range of the Bose and use theme frequently at home and work.

I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for in the ear headphones, especially considering the price. I paid $150 for the Shure E3's and actually prefer the Bose.

Customer Review: Over priced; underperforming
Summary: 2 Stars

I recently purchased the earbuds. I have not had proper time to let them burn in, but I believe that the first impressions are not likely to improve. The headphones are bass heavy with muddy sound. They do not separate sound in the same way that a better earbud will. The bass was so heavy when I first listened to them that I had to select another piece with less bass to give the buds a fair chance.

The fit was not comfortable at first. I had to change the plastic fitting to the smallest one so that they would not be so uncomfortable. They still are not very comfortable, but they might improve with breaking in.

The positives are that they are easily powered by an Ipod with more than sufficient volume. Second, if a listener does not want a bud that goes into the ear canal, these buds will do without falling out if you are using them while exercising. This is not a small consideration. I had the Philips earbuds that fit in the outside of the ear. They sounded okay, but not great. However, they would fall out of my ears.

For approximately $100.00, you can buy the Audio Technica which sound much better. You can buy the Sennheisers and have enough for a steak dinner. You can buy the new upper end Denon earbud and have a much more evenly performing earbud. In all of these three choices, you will have to have the bud in the ear canal. I am okay with this. I find it more comfortable than these. Any of the other three suggestions is far cheaper than an upper level Shure or Ultimate Ear.

Save your money and get another brand of earbud for comfort and performance.
