Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of BOSE (R) In-Ear Stereo HeadphonesCustomer Review: BEST PURCHASE I'VE MADE IN YEARS Summary: 5 Stars
These earbuds are the BEST. Believe me, I have tried them all. I am an audiophile kind of guy who expects nothing but the best in sound quality. I have tried out the Shure's earbud model. Great in highs but very uncomfortable to use. You really have to stick it inside your ear which hurts after a few minutes. I tried the Sony's earbuds which have absolutely no bass response, harmon kardon...good sound quality but not the best and again missing some of that full sound. Very rich, maybe too rich in sound and expensive too. I tried the apple earbuds that are for $30 dollars and let me tell you, they lack in sound clarity. Bass response is there but very muddy sound. It seemed that everywhere I looked for earbuds, they were either too rich with hardly any bass response or very bassy with muffled clarity. That is up until the wonderful guys at Bose came out with these IN-Ear headphones. The first thing that I said when I tried them on was WOW! The sit comfortably on the ear and not nudged inside the ear. They don't fall off easily like other earbuds and all of this before I even had a chance to hear some music through them. Once I heard the sound quality I was even more amazed. True, the bass response on these earphones are incredible where they are not muffled but I thought some fullness in sound could be improved. Little did I know that I had to play around with the EQ on my I-pod and Eureka, great filling sound with breath taking bass response. I have not been able to break apart from these headphones and I assure you that I will never return to all the other headphones out there. The sales clerk even forcasts that these earphones will be the thing to get for Christmas. I wouldn't be surprised since they are only $99. That is a pretty good price considering that other headphones go for the same if not more. Some up to $300 and they still can't beat the performance of these new headphones. Still don't believe me? Try them out for yourself. In fact they encourage you to do so and if the headphones don't meet your expectations they will allow you to return them in 30 days. Trust me, you will be pleased with this purchase. I know I was.
Customer Review: Triports are not for everyone Summary: 3 Stars
I just got the Triport IEs and while I agree that the sound is better than the crappy iPod earbuds, these earphones are not as stellar as everyone is raving. They're OK; the bass is strong, maybe too strong, but the real problem is in the fit. The Medium eartips are a bit too big and the small are a bit too small and the new fangled shape do not fit as comfortably into the ear as Bose must have hoped. God knows how anyone could fit the large eartips in a normal human ear. It takes me at least 5 mins of fiddling around to get the things to fit comfortably without slipping out. I had to get a bit too aggressive with my own ear to get them to finally fit in my ear cup. As these eartips wear, I can tell that they will slip right off and need replacement. Might be better to create a custom eartip out of silicone putty for these babies. In any case, I realize that maybe I am one of those people for whom in-ear headphones are not a great choice. I thought these would be different but they are not. Also missing is a volume control on the cord. That would have made them worth the $99. As is, I don't think they are worth it; as bad as the cords are on the ER6 I think they sound better.
As a followup, now 3 months of use: The silicone eartips fall of constantly. You must use the cumbersome carrying case or else you will lose the eartips. These earphones do not fit at all without the eartips. Sound is still good but the whole shape and eartip model is flawed. This product must be re-engineered.
Followup after 7 months: I just bought a pair of the V-Moda Vibe in-ear headphones. Hey, I'm an "in-ear headphone kinda guy" after all!! They haven't even broken in yet and they are head and shoulders above the Bose, less money too! The bass on the V-Moda is nicely balanced and not overpowering (they have another model that has huge bass)the eartips are of high quality and they fit great and stay on. Better noise canceling and a nice warm overall quality to the soundstage. You get 3 sizes of eartips and enough to last a while - 2 prs each size. Dont waste your money on the Bose; go for the V-Moda Vibe.
Customer Review: Good but could be better Summary: 3 Stars
My long journey to get the perfect headphones continues:
Having long accepted that apple's stock headphones - while better than most, just does not fit me plus they leak too much to enjoy the richness of my music. I started with the Sony fontopia series, great sounding, sealed up well. However, the poor quality of the cords were shocking - you will be lucky if they lasted more than 6 months before the cord covering teared or melted - replacement ear pieces were hard to get. I then bought the Sure E2 - nice thick cord, ear buds easy to replace - fitting was a pain - had to wrap the cord around the ear to stay put. I lost them and was going to buy again but I decided on a whim to buy the Bose. Compared to the shures - the cord is rather flimsy. The sound was remarkably good, as you would expect from Bose. However, some audiophiles many object to the level of bass, I found it overwhelming at times. One problem was the fit. While they were comforable, unlike ear buds from other companies, Bose's were not designed to seal your ear canal, they rather hook on to your ear so for better or worst - you may hear outside noise more than you may like - which here in New York can be quite often, also - if you are used to sealed earbuds you sometimes feel like they are falling out so you get the urge to push them into your ear canal. Maybe it is something you will get used to - walking is no problem but I haven't jogged in them yet so I can't say if they will fall out. The biggest problem was how easy the ear buds came out. I lost one the first day, and if you pull them out of a pocket or purse - they will come out 30% of the time. I also found the base of the plug a bit bulky. If you listen to your music in a library, quiet park, at home etc. these may be for you. However, if you are always on the go, in noisy areas, and are used to shoving in and pulling out your your phones from your pocket, purse etc unless you plan to carry extra buds, you may want to skip this one. Message to Bose, Instead of providing the nicest case I will never use, maybe some self adhesive strips would be nice.
Customer Review: Good sound; not worth the price Summary: 3 Stars
As other reviewers have mentioned, the sound of these headphones is generally great. It's crystal clear and gives a "life-like" sound. However, I only gave them three stars for a variety of reasons.
First, the earbuds only rest in the front part of the ear canal, so I have experienced that much more sound is lost than if the earbuds fit snuggly in the ear. Prior to this pair of earphones, I owned a pair of the Sony in-hear Frontopia headphones, and the earbuds were much more snug, delivering what seemed to be a fuller sound. For this Sony pair, I could have the volume level of my iPod at a certain level and the music would sound much louder than when listening with the Bose headphones at the same volume level, and I attribute this to the more snug fit of the Sony earbuds. Also, the bass of these Bose headphones is poor compared to that of the Sony Frontopia headphones. Especially when listening to certain songs with a high bass level, I have found the Bose headphones to produce a distorted sound.
The second problem, as another reviewer specifically mentioned, is that the earbuds easily fall off. Nevertheless, I must admit that Bose graciously sent me new earbuds without my request, which were said to stick on better. I have experienced that they do stick on better, but the aforementioned issues with the sound were not resolved.
Because I still think that these Bose headphones deliver good sound, but still lack some advantages of the Sony Frontopia headphones, I have snythesized the two pairs by using the earbuds from the Sony Frontopia headphones on my Bose headphones. Ironically, the result has proved to be very successful; I can enjoy the snug fit and optimum bass that I have experienced from the Sony Frontopia headphones, while still maintaining the crystal clear sound that the Bose headphones provide. I do not discourage anyone from buying the Bose headphones and agree to a certain extent with the many positive reviews attributed to these headphones; they're certainly worth trying out, but I do not think they are the best deal.
Customer Review: Two defective sets in a row! Summary: 1 Stars
When I first started seeing the advertisements for the new Bose in-ear headphones a few weeks ago, I was very excited. Finally, a serious headphone for portable music players!
I purchased the in-ear headphones from the Bose store at the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle in New York City. After 1-2 days, the problems with the headphones started. (I only wear my iPod at the gym, never on the street or subway.) After a few minutes, the music would cut out, sounding almost like a turntable needle skipping across a vinyl record. At first, I thought it was the iPod. I switched my old Apple earbuds back in, and the music played perfectly, with no skipping or disruption.
This pattern with the playback problem went on for several days. Sometimes, I could get through a 45 minute minute workout with the Bose headphones working flawlessly. Other days, within minutes, the 'skipping' would recur. I tried the Bose headphones on four(!) different iPods. The same problem occurred with the Bose headphones on all of them. (I own four iPods because I used to work for Apple.)
The playback problem has never occurred on my iPods with any of my Apple-brand earbuds. I also took one iPod, reformatted it, and reloaded all the music. The problem still occurred only with the Bose set.
So, I went back to the Bose store, explained the problem, and the people there quickly exchanged the headphones for me.
The next day, back at the gym, the problem recurred(!) with the second pair. Same exact thing. Skipping started happening after a few minutes. I quickly switched back to my Apple earbuds, and they played perfectly.
After a few more days of this aggravation, with no end in sight, I went back to the Bose store and returned the headphones for a full refund.
I must say, over the years, I have had a lot of respect and admiration for the Bose brand. From this experience, though, I would never buy another Bose product or recommend these headphones to any of my friends or colleagues.
