Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of BIC America DV62si Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black)Customer Review: A steal of a deal Summary: 5 Stars
This is a review of the BIC America DV62si bookshelf speakers (price $109.88 shipped per pair from Amazon.com).
I bought these as a gift for my father for his 75th birthday. He and his wife had no good sound in the house. All they had was some especially crappy sound coming out of their HDTV and nothing special from an iMac in another room. My dad had an old JVC AV receiver but no speakers anymore. I recalled reading the good reviews for the BIC America speakers and gave them a try.
They shipped to my apartment after about a week. By chance my audiophile friend was over dropping off a SACD player for me to try when the speaker shipment showed up. We opened it up and removed my NORH 9.0 marble speakers from my end tables and put the BIC speakers in their place. He and I and my wife were quite impressed with how good they sounded and not just for their price point. They have a very nice clarity that is not harsh. I have heard far more expensive speakers that have harshness, but not these. The sound makes me think that many other brands have several layers of cloth in front of the tweeter in comparison to the crispness and clarity of these BIC speakers.
In my large listening room the speakers weren't something I could use to replace my full-range NORH's or my full-range Wharfedale Saphire SP-89's I use as my rears even if they looked as good. They look okay for most people's taste. In my room with the lath and plaster walls I have the bass wasn't pronounced enough in comparison to my other speakers.
When I set these speakers up for my father yesterday in his house it was like -- wow -- when I had one of the speakers near one of his sheet-rock walls at about 45 degree angle about 10 inches away and about two feet off the floor. The other speaker had to sit on a fireplace step about 8" off the floor. A big Christmas tree was in the way of putting it in a more optimal position near another sheet-rock wall. The rear port of the speaker next to the sheet-rock wall really made the bass nicely extended/pronounced. The other speaker had brick behind it and there wasn't much, if any, room gain to the lower frequencies on that speaker that I could tell. While some music was playing with some good bass beats I told my father that these kind of speakers require them to not be too close to the back wall. He then pulled the little table the speaker was on against the sheet-rock wall away from the wall another 6" inches and immediately we noticed a change and improvement to the bass response.
Later I introduced him to the convenience of music on an iPod touch. I hooked that up to the receiver and I showed him a few other things as well. He was astonished at how good the music sounded from the little iPod, indistinguishable from the DVD/CD player. I recalled that I have an application on the iPod touch that is a signal/frequency generator, so I thought let's test our hearing ability. He couldn't hear anything above about 11,500 Hz and I at about 15,000 Hz. Then we tested the low-end ability of the speakers. To my surprise we could hear usable bass from the speakers, particularly the one next to the sheet-rock wall, down to the low 30's. I was impressed to say the least. And it wasn't like I had to turn the volume up much to hear/feel it.
Everyone was very impressed with how well they sounded; very live, like the band was in the room, saxophones, trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments sound very real. They are very happy with the gift.
By the way people, this is the second time I have encountered system wire messes that have superfluous extra wires hooked up. If you have components that use HDMI cables, you don't also need RCA type audio and video cables connected to those components as well. You can pull those cables out of there. Turn off everything first when you do cable connections.
One more thing, someone should go into business improving the look of the cabinets and marketing them to people who demand the finest looking speakers because the sound is already there.

Description of BIC America DV62si Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black)BIC America BIC Venturi DV62si Speaker DV-62SIB 719 Attention, all bass lovers needing small speakers: this stately pair of Venturi DV62si bookshelf speakers from BIC America uses a patented and specially tuned rear-panel Venturi port to extend the its low-frequency response to an impressive 43 Hz, nearly a full octave below the capabilities of most bookshelf speakers--the place where kick drums kick and bass guitars growl their deepest. The 2-way speakers would suitably fill out your home theater with surround sound, enliven your dorm or apartment with music, or provide gentle background ambience in your bedroom or business. Use one pair for stereo or surround applications or pick up 2 pairs (4 speakers) for use as the front and surround elements in a multichannel listening system. The speakers are magnetically shielded for distortion-free placement near your television or computer monitor. Video programs sound more lifelike and enveloping with timbrally matched speakers all around, and plenty of newer music formats--from the DTS surround CD to DVD-Audio and SACD--offer music from your favorite artists mixed expressly for surround-sound listening. (Alternately, you could use these as surround speakers with larger, floorstanding speakers for the front left/right channels.) Standing just under 15 inches tall, the DV62si speakers each use a custom-designed .75-inch, ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter for extended high frequencies and a 6-inch poly/graphite-blend woofer is light yet rigid for tight, accurate, and remarkably extended bass. What's in the Box Two speakers with grilles, a user's manual, and warranty information.
