Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of B&W 77mm #110 3.0 (1000x) Neutral Density Glass Filter.Customer Review: Amazing filter but not for the casual user Summary: 5 Stars
B+W makes a great product. The quality is top-notch. If you're serious about doing long exposure work then this is required kit for you! However, just a few warnings:
1. This is a VERY dark filter. You must adjust your camera completely before mounting the filter. This can easily throw off your focus depending on the lens you're using. I haven't yet found any way around this but if you know of one please let me know.
2. There is a color cast but it's generally more neutral than most other ND filters I've seen. Unlike plastic filters in holders which are clearly purple, this filter is more warm with much less color cast. You can't escape color casting with exposures this long and this one is easily correctly in seconds in Photoshop.
3. Treat it gently! I've kept mine in a cloth case and am very gentle and caring to my equipment, but nonetheless have still seen a few scratches. The surface is easily scratched.
I know that these comments may scare off some people, but if you can deal with them then you will really enjoy the creativity you can find with this filter. 5 stars!
Customer Review: Wow!!! Summary: 5 Stars
OK, I thought at first this may have been overkill and I had some $$$ burning a hole in my pocket. But I was wrong.
One of the things I have always like about night photography is that humanity is gone, with long exposure night shots, people don't show up (and I like the streaks of lighs from auto's). I can't tell you how many times I have sat, tripoded up, just waiting for that last person to leave the composition, so I can get the shot without anyone in it. This solves the problem. When you can shoot in bright sunlight at f/11 for 30 seconds, people disappear (except for those mulling around in the same spot).
While I think B&W primarily made this lens for industrial photography (welding, smelting, pouring iron, etc...), it works wonders for architecture and hiding people.
Some people have complained that it slightly warms the photo, but if you shoot RAW, that can easily be corrected in post processing.
Customer Review: Excellent ND Filter Summary: 5 Stars
This filter is terrific. As others have mentioned, it's closer to 11 stops of light reduction, and the filter does impart a color cast. Like many, I only shoot digital these days, so if you are converting from RAW I really can't imagine the color cast is an issue.
Others had mentioned that you need to get set up first and then put the filter on. This is indeed the case with SLRs and Digital SLRS that do not have live view. However, with a Canon 40d (and I assume most any DSLR with a live view feature), live view showed the composition on a sunny day with good clarity. You could certainly zoom in and manual focus accurately as well, so you don't have to take the filter off between separate compositions.
This filter is well worth the money to add a creative aspect to your bag not attainable otherwise on a sunny day.
Customer Review: Great filter if you know how to use it!.. Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw photos of what this filter could do, I quickly bought it!..
BUT, knowing how to use it is another story....so far, I've taken about 100 photos with it,
and have kept only three (3)..
In conclusiong, if you are familiar on knowing how to use this filter, then its
the best there is in my opinion. But, I'm still in the process of learning how to
use this expensive filter.
Another important point is: Some of the professionals who use this filter also
use Photoshop to embelish the shot. So, if you don't know how to use Photoshop,
then, you'd better think twice before buying it.
But, to be sure, that I've seen photos taken with this amazing filter that were
doctored up using Photoshop and I can truly say its unbelievably great.
Customer Review: Absolutely love it! Summary: 5 Stars
This filter is great for days when the lighting isn't all that great. Simply pop this baby on and photograph ocean rocks. Instant art. Obviously I'm being a little silly, but not too much. This filter gives us photographers so many more options on days where we don't have many. On days that are ideal, you can create some of the most stunning seascapes and the like with this filter. Simply compose then screw the filter on because you really can't see through it. As someone else said, there is a slight color cast, but totally workable and doesn't change my love for this filter.
You can see samples of how I've used this filter on my website. There are seascapes posted within my blog. The lone rock with the birds on it was taken at high noon on a bright day. Click on my name above to find the link.
