Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Axion AXN-9702 7-Inch Widescreen LCD Digital Picture Frame with Clock, Calendar and Alarm

Customer Review: Made in China
Summary: 1 Stars

I just received my AXN-9702, and it only took me 15 minutes to realize it was a low quality product. "Made in China", it says on the bottom.

The documentation is sparse and is written in poorly interpreted English. For example, on the outside of the box it says, "Powerful Built-In a Speaker" (no, the "a" is not my typo - it really says that on the box). The User Manual is not a book, but rather a fan-folded piece of paper with front-and-back print. There is no information whatsoever on how data is allowed to reside on your flash drive or memory card. The instructions, again in bad English, are also misleading. For example, here is the actual directions provided in the User Manual for "Basic play" (all capitalization and punctuation verbatim to manual): <first paragraph> "Power on the unit then enter the main menu, the screen shows 8 functions, e.g.: photo, music, photo + music, setup, calendar, clock, alarm and copy/delete." <second paragraph> "Insert a USB data traveler or SD/MMC/XD/MS card first, press NAVIGATION BUTTON to select one of the following function." That is the entire instructions for Basic Play. Note that your USB flash drive is called a USB data traveler, not a flash drive.

I loaded my pictures on a Sony MemoryStick and inserted it into the frame, but it would not read them. I then took the same MemoryStick, put it in my MemoryStick reader (that plugs into a USB port and reads the MemoryStick as a flash drive), then plugged the reader into the USB port on the frame. The pictures read fine. I reversed the process and verified that the frame was unable to read the MemoryStick in the MemoryStick port (i.e. the unit had a defective card reader).

Lastly, the digital picture resolution is low, making straight lines on photos look jagged.

I am glad that Amazon has an easy Return policy. I am disappointed in many aspects of this unit. Poor quality workmanship, poor documentation, poor picture.

Customer Review: Excellent Gift-Item!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This product was absolutely great! I bought it for a Birthday/Mother's Day gift for my mother. My mother is a song-writter and guitar player and when I began to play pictures among pictures along with music that she recorded herself, she was pratically in tears with how great this item is.

Though the item itself only holds roughly 15 pictures, it was no problem since I had a USB Flash Drive that my father used to use for college. Because he had it, I was able to upload over 50 pictures along with 12 mp3s. And it still had 3/4 of the drive free so you can imagine how many pictures could fit with just a simple $30 accessory.

Oh, and I was reading a previous review about it apparently not repeating the pictures, and I can testify for myself that this is just not true. It repeats the slideshow as soon as it's done going through all the photos, starting at the begining. You can go into the menu and select from Pictures, Music, Pictures & Music, Clock, Calendar, and Alarm.

The sound is okay, considering it's a picture frame. And also comes with a remote and extra ports compatible with many digital cameras as well as the trusty USB port that I mentioned above. All-in-all... This is a great product and I would recommend it to anyone. 5 Stars!!

Customer Review: Nice DPF
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this for my wife for her Birthday just before Xmas and she bought me (unknown to myself) one that's more than twice the price for Xmas. So I had the chance to compare. Conclusion is that it's not worth paying twice the price, you don't get any better quality. My wife is delighted with the Axion display. You should resize the pics to optimise them for the frame resolution though (640x480) since I think the problems the other users have had is that the frame probably doesn't do such a good job at downsizing. Microsoft have a utility to right click a group of files in explorer and it quickly duplicates them at the appropriate resolution. Just google for "Microsoft Powertoys" and download the image resizer from the webpage. Advantage of doing this is the files drop from around 2mB in size to more like 80kB so you can fit tons of pics on a small cheap SD card. Only downside for me is the widescreen aspect ratio of the frame. Natural aspect ratio of photographs is narrower than widescreen, so there's always unused area at the sides of the pictures. Would be OK if it played video files, but it doesn't. Not a big gripe considering how cheap the frame is though. Don't forget, you need a memory card! The frame has no memory built in.

Customer Review: Crappy Backlight.. It goes out...
Summary: 1 Stars

So my husband bought this for me because we are both stationed in iraq and instead of having a lot of photos sitting around, he thought this would be perfect for me to set on my desk. It was a great product for about a month. It was nice because I share my desk and instead of him having to look at MY photo's, he could just put it on the "clock" mode and it was perfect. BUT.. Here comes the downer. The backlight of this product went out. It was never dropped. I made sure that it was not, it was planted very firmly onto my desk. But one day I came to work and my co-worker said that it just went out. I know it is my backlight because I can still see the photo's scroll across but they are VERY dark I can barely see it. I would return it but 1. my husband bought it and 2. I've already had it for a little over a month now and you cannot return it after so long. So I give this a rating of CRAP! because I really didn't even get to enjoy it. So now I am going to have to find another one. So just keep in mind that the backlight may go out on you...

Remember, you get what you pay for. The item has a few interesting features listed and this, (and the price) is what initially caught my eye. Unfortunately when I fired the device up I was greeted with an ugly UI (always a surprise as this is just software), a poor resolution screen and unbelievably long load times when you try to go forward or backward through the pictures. I had purchased this for a girlfriend but I was so embarrassed by its poor performance I went a purchased a more expensive picture frame from Best Buy.

This one is going in the gift pile to be used for x-mas rewrapping.
