Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Aurora AS890C 8-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper/Credit Card Shredder with Basket

Customer Review: Poor performing shredder
Summary: 1 Stars

This shredder is difficult to use and functions poorly.

When I opened the package, there were still remnants of previous shredding in the shredder (did they ship me a returned product?).

This shredder is difficult to use. The shredder turns on as expected, but does not "eat" the paper without repeated prodding.

The 8-page limit is not accurate under normal conditions. In order to get the shredder to start eating paper, one must make several attempts. (Took several seconds per set of pages fed.) Once the document does get fed, it starts crumpling. The crumpling (due to pages not being fed perfectly) causes one page to act (as far as the shredder is concerned) as two or three pages, depending on how much it gets folded. This effectively lowers the 8-page limit to a 4-page limit.

I am keeping it, however, because my paper shredding needs are limited to about four pages a month.

Customer Review: Broke after 2 uses
Summary: 1 Stars

My shredder broke after 2 uses. The first time I used it, it shredded paper pretty well, but I did notice that I had to place the paper in very carefully (i.e. straight) so that the paper wouldn't curl up and jam in the blades. The second time I used it indeed the paper did not go in straight, curled up and jammed the blades. The machine stopped working and hasn't come back since. I've turned it off, let it rest, etc etc. It doesn't even make a noise when I turn it on. I have tried to pull out some of the paper from the blades but the paper bits appear to be stuck for good. I am trying to return this shredder to Amazon, but I'm not sure if I can as it's been over 30 days and I threw away the box already. Word to the wise: If you buy this shredder, use it a few times in the first 30 days in case it also breaks on you, so you can return it. Actually, to the wiser I say: Just buy another (better) shredder.

Customer Review: Effective and noisy
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this for its low price. It seems to work well, though each page over one slows the machine. Close to 8 pages and it nearly stops. I did manage to shred about 400 pages in a row before the motor overheated and turned the machine off. Shredding even one page is noisy, though. Close to 7 pages and there is noticeable drag on the motor--but it chews its way through to the e e n n d d. Shredding one credit card at a time is a small inconvenience for the price, and one does wish for more power.
11 months later. The shredder is OK. It balks with more than 3 sheets. Just today it got a 6-sheet feed and jammed. When put in reverse, the paper jam forced the plastic top off, breaking the screw connections, and it no longer works.
I contacted the manufacturer. There was one month left on the warranty. Within a week I had a new shredder. I am pleased with this fast, no questions response.

Customer Review: It does the job
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this item a few months ago mainly because I bring work home and need to dispose of documents that contain clients' personal information. I also felt it was important to shred bank and credit card statements, having experienced credit card fraud on two occasions.

The unit arrived promptly, as is usually the case with Amazon purchases. It works as described and has no problem handling up to eight sheets of paper as well as credit cards and envelopes. I have not experienced a paper jam although the paper bits do tend to stick to the shredder blades and fly everywhere when I empty the basket, which is not very large. There is an indicator light to tell you when to empty the basket but you could simply look through the small window in the front of the unit. It seems to be holding up well despite heavy use (up to a few hundred sheets daily). A good buy for the price.

Customer Review: No Problems Here
Summary: 5 Stars

Having read over some of the comments and ratings on this average size paper shredder, I haven't encountered the problems others have. The shredder activates easily once paper is introduced and I've not had a problem having to adjust how the paper was introduced to the activation mechanism. It's the perfect size for my small home office and the right color (black).

You know those pesky credit card offers that come to you through the mail all the time? Don't even bother opening them. They're not too thick for the shredding capacity and it'll save you time by only having to introduce one piece instead of multiples if you cut open the envelope.

Credit cards whip through it without hesitation. And the basket size is just right (I empty mine about every 10 days now).

Reliable. Great price. Perfect size. Works flawlessly. What's not to like?
