Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Aurora AS890C 8-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper/Credit Card Shredder with Basket

Customer Review: Smaller than anticpated
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had several shredders in the past (this is replacing my last one that the dog ate the cord)and all have been the size of a small waste basket. Not the case this time, its more like half the size of a small wastebasket. Thus it fills up quickly and I have to empty it faster than i would like. As for its claim of shredding 8 pages it did slower than i would like but it did do it.

On the plus side if you do a page at a time it is the quickest shredder I have used and to do one page at a time is faster than doing the 8 pages at once. Doing 3-4 pages at a time is no problem at all. It is slightly quieter than my previous shredder. It also looks nice as it is all black and very slick design, also there is a window that shows how full it is. After 20 minutes of use no over heating problems like my previous shredder.

I looked at lots of shredders before I made this purchase and for the price I am satisfied that this shredder is comprable to the shredders in this price range if not a higher price range.

Customer Review: Great little shredder
Summary: 5 Stars

Fits under desk. Noisy, but what crosscut shredder isn't. Small waste basket has to be emptied more often than other larger ones, but so what. I have owned 5 shredders in the last five years and have come to terms with the fact that the lifespan on these products suck. At the $40 price level it can't be beat. I can buy 4 of these before approaching the price of a fancy one that will just crap-out on me in a year anyway.

Tips for longevity:
* Pay attention to the thickness of what you're shredding. Shredders may be rated at 8 sheets but thick sheets of paper decrease the amount you can shred at one time. So take it slow and listen to the effort exerted by your machine to know if you need to modify your shredding technique.
* Shred as often as possible to avoid mass shredding and jamming or overheating your machine. Resist shredding that unopened envelope with several folded sheets. When they're stacked that way it's like 16 sheets. After the first big jam the performance is all down hill from there.

Customer Review: Nice compack Shredder
Summary: 5 Stars

This replaces an old Fellows shredder that has stopped working. This shredder is much smaller, lighter, works faster and is better looking with its black & sliver colors than the Fellows it's replacing. Unlike the Fellows shredder wastebasket this cannot be for general use because the shredder housing covers the basket opening making this only useable for shredding paper. The wastebasket comes with a window so you can see when the basket is filling up which becomes very useful. I like it and found its smaller size much easier to place around than the bigger fellows' one and for the price it's well worth investment. Haven't tried to shred a credit card yet but I don't see it having much trouble with that. I don't shred much so time will tell how long it last but buying some Fellows shredder oil is a good investment to extend it's life.

Something I forgot to point out this only has 2 settings, auto and reveries NO continues on, so you only have one direction to clear a jam which I haven't had in over a month

Customer Review: You're better off putting $40 into a paper shredder
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a small, cheap shredder, emphasis on cheap. At first I thought the light weight, plastic unit would work well for my basic needs and then it jammed on 6 sheets of paper(8 sheet max recommended). While using the convenient reverse function to clear the jam, the top literally began to separate as the motor, too strong for the cheap mounting, began to break the plastic connection holding it in place. Making sure never to put in more than 4 sheets of paper, or two sheets if they happened to be folded in half, I didn't have too many jamming problems until I tried a credit card. One, single, credit card jammed the shredder and because it's so short in relation to a sheet of paper, the reverse function can't clear the remaining plastic.

The moral of the story is, I now have a paperweight where I once thought I had a paper shredder. Thinking about the title of this review, if you put $40 into one of these shredders to save yourself the hassle, that would probably jam it too.

Customer Review: Good product for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product because it said it could shred up to 8 sheets of paper at a time as well as shred credit cards. I also loved that the price was more affordable for the features I wanted than other models.

For the price, I am pleased. If I had paid more for it, I would not feel like I had gotten my money's worth. It does shred paper and credit cards effectively, but I have gotten it jammed a few times, spending hours to unjam it. I didn't use unusual paper and I didn't even try to do more than 8 pieces of paper at a time. It just seemed like it got sick of my funneling paper through it for more than 30 seconds straight and jammed. On the plus side, it doesn't happen too often, so on a normal basis it still shreds fine. I have given up trying to do multiple papers at once and have just done one or two at most so I don't have to unjam it anymore. This has worked just fine. Also I like the little clear window in the front to see how high the paper shreds are getting.
