Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Aurora AS890C 8-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper/Credit Card Shredder with BasketCustomer Review: JUNK! Broke in less than 2 months. Summary: 1 Stars
I ordered this item 10/22 to replace a shredder I'd had over 3 years for shredding bills, receipts, mailing labels (light household use). This model is not as nice as the one it replaced because you have to position the paper "just so" to get the auto feed to work. Sometimes I let the kids shred for me, and they had same complaint.
This unit was ordered 10/22. Arrived the end of October and I don't have enough shredding on daily basis so I save it in a small basket and shred accumulated stuff about once/week, perhaps using it for the first time in early November. A few days before Christmas I emptied the bin for the FIRST time (mentioning this to show how little shredding was actually done) When I replaced the top, the unit was shredding only on the left side and the Auto Feed won't stop running, I reversed it to make sure nothing was stuck(nothing came out) then unplugged it and didn't think much more beyond that, til today. Now it's running continuously and NOT shredding AT ALL anymore. There does not appear to be anything stuck, lodged or jammed inside and even though both auto and reverse run continuously it is not taking any paper. I attempted to return via Amazon but my "return window" has expired. Thoroughly disappointed; would not recommend.
Customer Review: Works well but does not shred to the degree I was looking for Summary: 2 Stars
I only used the product for one day so I cannot comment as to how long this product will last. However, for those of you looking to replace a strip cut shredder this may or may not be the one for you. I was looking for a confetti type cut and thoguht that a cross cut is what I needed. I ran documents through the shredder and was not impressed with the size of shards that were left in the basket. Basically, after I sent sensitive documents through the shredder the shards were much larger than I expected! They were about an inch in length and one of them had most of my name and all of my social security number on it. This shredder would probably work great for credit card junk mail and items like that. But anything with social security numbers you may want to double check to make sure it cross cuts it the way you expected it to. On a side note, the noise was much less than my other shredder which sounds like a small jet engine taking off in my house.
Be very careful to make sure that this fits your expectation before you pull the trigger. I am returning mine and on the hunt for something more powerful. I have feeling after looking at shredders for hours that I may have to spend more than I want to get real privacy.
Customer Review: Good economical home shredder Summary: 4 Stars
When my old shredder stopped running I looked for an inexpensive replacement for use at home where my shredding needs are modest. The Aurora AS890C meets my needs well. It has a sleek and attractive appearance and just the right size to tuck next to my desk. I found its cross cut shredding to be quick and efficient. Advertised to be able to shred up to 8 sheets at once, I found that anything over 4 sheets seemed to put a strain on the motor but the unit did do its job. Most of the time I found it easier to fold the paper I am shredding since shredding a single 8.5" x 11" sheet requires one to carefully align the sheet to make sure the auto start feature works correctly, a minor inconvenience. Though the product claims to be able to shred papers containing staples the detailed instructions caution that doing so could shorten the shredders life. The instructions also recommend not shredding anything that contains adhesive such as labels or envelopes. The idea of shredding unsolicited mail offers all at once as some reviewers have claimed surely will lead to operational trouble down the road. In summary a good shredder for occasional use at home.
Customer Review: Works but too noisy and did have a smell. Summary: 3 Stars
I picked this shredder up as a small home/office type shredder. Wasn't looking for anything crazy, but just wanted something to handle junk mail, credit cards, etc. The unit is inexpensive at $39.99 which is what I paid and arrived packaged well. It doesn't feel cheap, but I immediately noticed the noise. It was so loud that watching TV or listening to the radio is unbearable.
I read the other reviews, but decided to give it a shot as I priced other brands/models and this seemed to be good. It does shred well, but I also noticed that it chokes at about 5 sheets, not nearly the 8 that it claims to be good until. I haven't shredded any credit cards, so I can't review the functionality of that feature, but I'd imagine that it's fine.
I would recommend this to anyone who is doing very light shredding as if you are doing multiple loads of shredding, the noise and amount of pages you can do at a time, may become problematic. I did notice a smell of burning paper, so I don't know if this is a defective unit or what, but if I continue to notice it within the next few uses, I'll have to send it back.
Customer Review: Not as robust as the description implies. Summary: 3 Stars
This is my first shredder so I can't compare it to others but I can compare it to the description from the manufacturer.
They say it can do 8 sheets at once but I find that anything over 4 sheets causes the motor to slow noticeably.
They say it can shred credit cards when placed in the special slot. I found that the motor nearly stalled while shredding the first credit card I tried.
The second card actually did cause the motor to stall after which the machine wouldn't accept paper any more. So I ran it in reverse for about 15 seconds until it spit out the remains of the second credit card after which it began working normally again.
If you've read this far you probably think I hate this machine but that's not the case. With my expectations properly lowered, I find that it works pretty well. I never feed it more than 4 sheets at a time (it accepts staples without complaint) and I've gone back to my time-honored method of credit card destruction - scissors.
So far I've sent about 400 sheets through with no more problems.
