Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Aurora AS810SD 8-Sheet Strip-Cut Paper, CD and Credit Card Shredder Basket

Customer Review: Good-Not-Great
Summary: 3 Stars

Major issue with shredder relates to width of shredded strands. They are about 2/3 of a centimeter. This is roughly twice as wide as my old shredder. This will likely be sufficient for home use in which you are trying to take basic precautions that your information does not fall into the wrong hands. For those more concerned about security, the width could create a problem. If I were worried about folks nabbing my garbage, for example, I would definitely not buy this shredder.

Otherwise I am satisfied. The basket is unattractive gray plastic, but the shredding mechanism extends, so you may have a more aesthetically appealing container to hold the shreds.

Overall: It's a shredder. It shreds paper just fine. Staples go through without a problem. The shreds may be too wide for those with higher levels of security concern. The basket is unattractive.

Customer Review: Very good for light duty, not good for credit cards
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm an "occasional shredder"-- essentially, using it only on mail that has personally identifying information. This little machine has worked just fine for me for more than a year now. It does NOT, however, work on credit cards or CDs unless you really put in a ton of effort to force them through the machine-- and even then, I couldn't get it to work most of the time. But for paper, no problem. A few sheets at a time, and I didn't feel like I needed to empty it very often. You can just take the top off and put it on a larger wastebin if you need to do a big job, as a previous reviewer mentioned.

All in all, this has been worth the money for me, though if I had it to do over, I'd probably go with a diamond shredder or something else that's more secure. I look in the basket sometimes and notice that someone could pretty easily reassemble my mail if they were so inclined.

Customer Review: DISAPPOINTING
Summary: 2 Stars

Before ordering this item, I had read some other purchasers' opinions and felt this shredder would be as satisfactory as my Fellowes [Model DM3].

Had I the Aurora shredder first, I might have been content with its function. However, after having a Fellowes shredder for better than 15 years, that worked effortlessly [until I inadvertently shred a document with a thick binding and it jammed the mechanism and ultimately botched the sensor], the Aurora is a huge disappointment.

When feeding papers into the sensor it takes some coaxing to activate; if the paper slides 'out of the sensor's range' it will hang there until another sheet is fed to activate. The cost was nominal.

I guess the saying, you get what you pay for is applicable here.

I'd look into a Fellowes before getting this one.

Customer Review: OK to strip a few papers
Summary: 3 Stars

It is a good shredder for a small job, but here are the cons.
1) You can get a cross-strip shredder at Walmart for less money from the same shredder company.
2) It does not do 8 pages. I found 4 pages is maximum before it starts to complain.
3) Hesitates for credit cards but does shred them.
4) I am not going to even try to shred a CD.
5)The basket is small and needs to be emptied more often.

I would try a Fellowes shredder as that is the one I had before this. It died on me as twice I shredded the charity org envelopes with pennies/car dealer ads with keys in them.

I generally open all my junk mail because rebate checks, confidential queries by insurance companies, automatic renewals where you have to opt out to stop subscriptions are sent in envelopes that look like junk mail.

Customer Review: Broke after a few sheets run through
Summary: 1 Stars

I guess the price was too good to be true. Knowing it was not 'high end', I ignored the manufacturer's claim that it would handle 8 sheets and was determined to treat it with kid gloves. I only put in 2 sheets at a time. After about 20 sheets (two at a time), it jammed and the motor would not stop running. It said to use card stock to try and push the paper through. After quite awhile, that seemed to get rid of the jam, but when put in AUTO it remained on constantly. Another couple of sheets and then the AUTO started working, but the cutters would not feed the paper. I was only trying to feed it paper..no staples, no glued items..and only a couple sheets at a time. Amazon allows returns on this item. I am returning it for refund and now know it is best to spend a few extra dollars on shredder, in hopes that it is better quality.
