This adapter works by providing a box that your car antenna and the XM radio plugs into with a lead that goes to your radio where the orignal antenna plugs in.
Because my car has a retractable powered antenna i was not able to use the cheesy connector that came with the radio.
With this product you get NO outside FM interference becasue the box the antenna plugs into works as an A/B switch and shuts down input from the antenna.
It's like tuning to channel 3 to get cable on your TV same concept.
I used to install mobile electronics so this installation wasnt a problem but you might need assistance if you have no experience with taking your radio out or cannot reach the back of the radio.

Installed in my 1996 Civic to an XpressRC. Sound quality was poor. When you would switch from FM to XM the sound levels where vastly different. FM sounded normal but XM had minimal bass and treble and the overall sound volume level was lower. Every time I would switch between the two I would have to readjust or change the volume level. Very annoying. I couldnt live with it. Thankfully my Honda had a cassette unit and I was able to use the cassette that came with the XpressRC to use. The sound quality is incredible, even better then FM and there is no need to change the volume levels when switching between the two.Customer Review: Wish I'd know about this 3 years ago

Two problems solved in one afternoon !
No more searching for clean FM channels as I approach a big city, stations can no longer override the XM reception.
Better reception, I can put the XM antenna on top of roof instead of on hood near the truck's FM antenna.
Installation is easy IF you can get to your FM radio's wiring. Otherwise yes, you may need to pay a pro to do it. For under $5 you can get incredibly detailed model-specific instructions on getting at the radio ... [...].
Toyota pickups use standard antenna jacks so didn't require any extra adapters.

This product works exceptionally well.
My dad travels all over the country and when he had the XM received with no adapter, he wasn't able to hold an FM station consistently without constantly changing channels. Needless to say it was very frustrating.
We purchased this FM adapter and installed it in his 2005 Dodge Ram 3500. It works great. He chose a radio station at random and has never changed it in the weeks he's been traveling. Sound is crystal clear, no more interference.
Highly recommended if you don't have a casette player or line-in/aux with your stereo system.

What a huge difference going from using the cassette adapter for my XM radio to the professional installation with the Audiovox XMFM1 Xpress XM Satellite Radio FM Switch Box! With the adapter the sound was very thin and tinny, and there was no bass to speak of whatsoever. With the professional installation, the sound quality for music is very good, almost CD quality. The sound quality for sports and news is also much better with the professional installation, though it's still not as good as the regular FM. All in all, I'd highly recommend making the investment in having your XM installed.
