Just got the onyX XM car kit, and had it for a couple days before the static got annoying. Here in Phoenix, the static doesn't really make it unusable, since we do have a few empty stations around, but it was pretty annoying nonetheless. I did some research and found this, and no matter where I looked for reviews, they all seemed very positive. So i went and bought this, pretty confident it would do what it says it does.
Believe it! If you're even remotely curious as to whether this is a good item to get or not, stop wondering. The difference in sound is SOOO worth the very reasonable cost. Its not that difficult to install either, unless your particular vehicle makes is hard to pull out the radio. I didn't know whether I needed adapters so I got one for my 2006 Nissan Frontier, but it turns out I didn't even need them. Very simple to install, took me about an hour, but I work kinda slow LOL. All I needed was a plastic putty knife (to pry off the panels), a phillips screwdriver (to pull out the radio) and some pliers (to disconnect and reconnect my battery. If you're hesitant to do this yourself, you could get it done somewhere, but I bet that if you have a handy neighbor/cousin/friend/etc, that they could do it rather easily.
So, for me this product was worth everything I paid for it. I got a little cut on my hand since the panels had some sharp sides, but aside from that (which was really my own fault), i have nothing but positive things to say about the product.

Let me preface this review by stating that I currently have the exact system I was attempting to set up in two other vehicles already and everything works perfectly.
Before installation the XM player would loose signal strength when the main radio channel was strong and then you had to spend time finding another station that was currently not used by an actual radio station, hence the purchase of this, which let me state again works perfectly in two other vehicles, however both were installed well over 3 years ago.
After hard wiring the entire system, the installation was completed by a very trusted mechanic, we discovered that the device didn't work AT ALL, and wouldn't by-pass the radio channel as it was supposed to. After testing and trying the second direct adapter, we have 2 other cars we were hoping to install this system in, we found that neither product worked and rather acted as if it wasn't there AND cut out the xm signal that was there initially.
Needless to say we packaged them both back up and returned them. Mind you, for other reasons unrelated to the XM we had one of the original cars apart and were able to positively identify that they should have been the EXACT same, but clearly wasn't.
My advice would be to purchase the item from somewhere else, we are ordering it from radioshack and hoping to have better luck, as the ones from Amazon are pure crap.

I bought this item because my xm sirius radio kept losing reception everytime I approached a city or county and the stronger FM station would overcome my weak sirius reception and I would have to change frequencies, sometimes 3 or more times.After reading other reviews about this item,I decided to try it.I'm happy to say it works like a charm.I'm a truck driver and my xm radio is in my tractor truck.I now can travel over 250 miles and I might have to change FM frequencies maybe twice.Sometimes I can go 150+ miles without even changing frequencies.It even overrides the big city FM frequencies.My reception is now coming in so crystal clear with every station sounding like it's in stereo surround sound with the different vocals and instruments bouncing from speaker to speaker.It was fairly easy to put in also, you just have to get to the car antennae cable in the back of the radio.On my truck I just had to reach my hand up behind the radio and pull out the cable.You might have the same luck with a car.You'll need some zipties to tie all the wires up to keep them from hanging down and looking sloppy, I recommend black zipties.You can get them at any auto store.Once again this item is a must have.Oh yeah,you won't need that ugly FM extender when you use this item.Customer Review: Not a difficult Install

Although the package is quick to point out "professional installation recommended" It is really an easy install as compared to the typical antenna for XM. The "need to knows" include how to remove your radio(you have to get behind it), the wiring diagram for your car's radio so you can tap into power and ground and the type of antenna connection your vehicle has. My GM product had a motorola connection for the antenna which is smaller than the standard "OEM" type; the size on this unit. This required the purchase of some adapters which can be found rather inexpensively on eBay but unless you don't mine putting things back while you wait get all of your parts together before you begin. The sound quality with this unit is excellent. It works by transmitting a signal on the FM frequency at an unused location. I haven't travelled far enough out of my area to determine if it will be necessary to change the channel much but in my 50 mile area I haven't had to touch it and am quite pleased with it. If you want to listen to something other than XM turning off or unplugging the XM receiver restores your radio to preinstalled functionality. So unless you have an auxillary connection to your radio, this is the best way to get XM into your audio system.Customer Review: An absolute MUST have!!

This product was very easy to install (about 30 minutes in my Honda). I can't believe how clear the sound is compared to using the FM modulator alone. I would always get interference from other FM stations and was getting very irritated. I bought the Fm Direct today and am very very pleased. I would never consider buying an XM satellite radio unless you buy this product. All XM radios should come with this product because the XM radio is otherwise useless without it. The FM Direct does everything it says it does and you will not be let down. Truly a must have. And don't be suckered into a "Professional" install. Once you get your stereo out of the dash it is just a matter of plugging some things in and your done. Save yourself the money and DIY.
